Nah. DTC said that's what you do when you've run out of ideas. Kitchen sink drama is what it is doing again and doing it well.

It's on a slowburn storylines are building nicely and they're keeping the twists and turns coming.

Look at the meltdown on social media and everywhere of Johnny coming out or JAne returning. No explosions required just good honest storytelling. No explosions or fires required.
it is refreshing that marketing teams can actually keep quiet about a storyline and let it play out on screen. everything has to be promoted to death and hinted at ad nausuem online before you see it, the real drama is in the not knowing.

The Taste stunk in the ratings in the US, am amazed ABC gave it a second series.

Although 2m for Channel 4 in primetime is good going these days!
1.8m would be a good average but this is just episode 1. And your average C4 programme isn't advertised at cinemas or on ITV.

But at least the breakdown was very stable. Sometimes shows in this genre grow over time.

Well if The GBBO can go from 3 million to 9 million in 2 years...

Yep. Carl's death, Denise proposing to herself on ian's behalf, Jane returning, Mick's reaction to Johnny, Kat's twins... all genuine surprises.

I'm loving it at the moment and I haven't said that this confidently since the live episode!

Great for The 7.39, it's always good to see dramas improving on their first episode instead of falling like nearly all of them do. Silent Witness did the same last week. Shame The Taste couldn't launch higher for Channel 4 after how much effort went into promoting it.

Not sure about The Musketeers on Sundays, as I've already said it would mean a break 4 episodes in for the Baftas. I would have been tempted to launch it over two nights, get the CTM lead in for the first episode and then continue it on Mondays. Then have Jonathan Creek for the three weeks before the Baftas and The Ark starting the week after.

I have to say it flows much better now and not having every twist and turn revealed to the press makes it much better. I love it when the press are not even told.

As a smaller soap its easier for Hollyoaks to get away with doing shocks, such as Linsey's death a few years ago.

Should Celebrity Big Brother not be higher, or is 2 million ok?

Well.....

Wasn't expecting this. Consolidated ratings are out, but the NYE fireworks are not there.... The Gary Barlow show is shown as being 78 minutes long - so it includes the fireworks.

New Year's Eve 2013 - consolidated ratings

1 - Gary Barlow's Big Ben Bash: 8.32m
2 - EastEnders: 7.78m
3 - Emmerdale: 6.98m (6.74m excl. +1)
4 - BBC News (18:30): 5.55m
5 - The Graham Norton Show: 4.48m
6 - Holby City: 4.25m
7 - BBC News (22:00): 4.15m
8 - Celebrity Mastermind: 3.96m
9 - ITV News (18:45): 3.66m (3.60m excl. +1)
10 - Two Doors Down: 3.56m

Would be funny if they were classed as January 1st just to see this place implode!

Lame Presumably it'll be changed back again in the six week adjustment cycle, like the Wimbledon final?

Just seen the 7:39 figure. Glad to see it rose as it was a great piece of lighthearted drama.

Disappointing, if Still descent for The Taste

Whats more surprising is the fact it was very stable throughout the hour.

Meanwhile:
Location Location Location returned with 2.7 Million (inc+1)

I did have a feeling we'd only get a combined figure, after the same happened with Wimbledon. Should be sorted out in the six week amendment cycle, meaning an extra day of "debate" weeks after most people stopped caring.

Thanks ronant for the ratings. Good timeshift for Eastenders, but it normally adds a lot on NYE I think.

Or maybe the submitted programme log was indeed all one show. With an EPG adjustment so that people could easily record just the fireworks?

The problem with EE is, that the people who have stopped watching the show are unlikely to start watching again. It's very difficult to get back into watching a soap again as there are so many episodes nowadays. It's much easier to start watching a drama or a one of series as it's not a daily commitment. To be fair to EE though, people I know who have always watched EE, even through the bad times, say it has improved vastly over the last few weeks.

You know I did wonder about it all being lumped as Barlow because the programme junctions were at 11.15 and 12.30. So I guess it's not a surprise.

Itvistas will be popping the champagne corks now!

I didn't factor Gary Barlow swallowing the fireworks into my calculations!

Seems likely. So we might not find out the winner of 2013 until late Feb!

Oh yes! We will have to wait another 6 weeks!

Yep! It's happened several times now. What was submitted was what shouldn't have been submitted. Ahem!

That said, there's been more than few comments on DS and twitter along the lines of "i had stopped watching but now I'm hooked again"

Obviously there's no way of telling how representative this is but it shows people can be persuaded to take another look. The reality is, it doesn't happen overnight, it'll happen over months, and probably not be full realised until the Autumn after the usual summer dip.

25.0% all-day share for BBC One is very robust. 6.7% approx for Channel 4 is only just above BBC Two's 6.6%. A healthy 5.0% for Channel 5. Less than 15% for ITV.

I thought the BARB day ended at 2 am so no question about the fireworks being in 2013.

I expected around 2.2m for The Taste, but the rating of 1.8m is not that bad.

CBB did well, shame it dropped slightly but it was up yet again on the first Tuesday of CBB11. If it time shifts as well as CBB11, it will be the highest rated series on Channel 5 period! Tonight I would expect around 2.5m. Good for MJ too!

Damn, if only EE could make it to that magic 8m mark, it has been so much better this year than it had throughout all of 2013.
