Traditionally Birds of a Feather has had extended Christmas specials in the past when it aired on the BBC. According to Wikipedia, "The 1990 Christmas special is 75 minutes, the 1993 Christmas special is 60 minutes long, while the 1991, 1992, 1994 and 1997 Christmas specials are 50 minutes in duration." Now, without wanting to start a massive Christmas debate... do we think ITV will put BOAF on Christmas Day this year?

I think if they were smart they'd put Birds and Downton on both Christmas Day and New Year's Day at 60mins and 90mins each. Shortening Downton and having a decent comedy would help diversify the lineup on ITV.

Figures published today in Broadcast magazine (covering overnights for the first four BARB weeks of the year, i.e. the BARB month of January) indicate that BBC One will score the highest official January share since 2007.

Clearly the new daytime line-up has helped, but to be up by +0.4 point or so on last January (when that new line-up was in place) would be creditable.

BBC Two also looks to be up on last year: its overnight share has increased from 6.3% to 6.85%, although in January 2013 the now-defunct BBC HD had 0.3%, mostly made up of BBC Two simulcasts.

Official shares are not out till Monday, but for BBC One and Two they tend to be the same (or slightly higher) than the overnight shares.

I've honestly never seen Silent Witness as a dark or especially gory drama. In general though I tend think the descriptor of dark gets thrown around far too much in modern television and entertainment in general in fact. Its been the favoured buzz word of the last few years with seemingly every other drama at the very least wanting to be labelled as dark (or some variation of).

I'm not overly optimistic about Tomorrow People's prospects.

That The CW opted to move it rather than Reign to provide a strong launch pad for The 100 (a drama they justifiably have incredibly high hopes for) isn't the greatest sign to begin with. That they've moved it to Monday night opposite The Voice where they've struggled to gain any kind of traction for a while now only makes it worse. As does the fact that its getting a new drama lead-in from Star-Crossed which I hold out very little hope for at this point. I would have been infinitely more confident if they'd moved it to Nikita's Friday night slot leaving Hart of Dixie where it is to serve as a lead-in for Star-Crossed. We'll see what happens though because The CW can be tricky to predict at times given the wide scope of factors that rule their decision making process. At this point though I think its going to be season two orders for Reign and The 100 with Star-Crossed and Tomorrow People being one and done. We'll see though.

I was thinking that last night. Is Madge really dying? Is she confused by what the Doctor apparently told her? is it an insurance scam? Is it a set up for a big end of series farce? There's more to it than just literal scenarios. This is Benidorm after all, not Coronation Street!

I'd have to agree with yorkie and say it is pretty gory as television goes. Not that I'm complaining though - I'm an avid viewer. A couple of weeks ago there was a nice lingering shot of hundreds of maggots crawling about in a woman's chest!

Out of interest, what would you consider as gory dramas? The walking dead?

Donald did the same for a life insurance scam, so i hope this is a similar case as well.

Low for the soaps.

Those soap figures are not looking that healthy, infact all the soap ratings aren't that good for January. Perhaps all soaps are now in decline and will not recover.

Shame for Birds, it was a really good episode. Deserved more. No doubt Samuel will denounce it as a failure.

Shame for both really, but 6m for a sitcom is really good. Assuming they include +1, Benidorm figure is a bit low - I thought it would increase.

It seems everything was down last night.

Birds is doing really well. I know it was the lowest episode so far last night, but at 6 million that's a terrific result really. It hasn't crashed since the first episode at all despite some insisting it would. It's now a very solid option for ITV.

Benidorm looks a bit low but 5 million is still OK and it seems to have beaten Silent Witness. Looks like everything was on the low side last night.

#hiddenkingdoms bowed out on a series low with 2.7m/12.4%, overpowered by #emmerdale and #birdsofafeather on ITV overnights.tv

Definitely a low night all round.

With everything down across the board, and now having beaten Silent Witness the figure looks better than first thought. All though still low for - but should timeshift to around 6.4m.

This is something the australian market has focused on heavily since the success of masterchef/the block back in 2009/2010 with all 3 commercial network scheduling reality/entertainment in the 7.30pm slot. Stripped reality has a few benefits, if its well produced it builds momentum quickly and becomes watercooler tv because its on nightly, its much less likely that people will PVR it unlike drama, and it fills a big chunk of a schedule for a better economy of scale. Obviously the risk of it being a turkey does exist, but I'm really surprised ITV or Channel 4 haven't tried My Kitchen Rules which is essentially a bigger budget come dine with me crossed with masterchef, or even a reimagining of the Block (or its competitor House Rules). There is an audience for these type of shows, but broadcasters seem reluctant to try it

Aww thats terrible and real shame. It is an excellent wildlife programme which does not deserve that figure.

It will no doubt get a similar figure for its repeat on Sunday afternoon though, the nature doumentaries usually do.

I didn't want to be the first to bring it up. But he does have an uncanny ability to send ratings plummeting.

I like Ashley, but he does seemingly spell ratings doom (especially for his BBC shows).

Looks like everyone was out last night or they took the words of Why Don't You? a bit literally
