Did we ever get a final consolidated figure for the New Year's Eve fireworks display on BBC1 ? I seem to remember someone saying it would take six weeks because it was technically spread across two days. Also a figure for Scotland.

The Voice will probably benefit again from the poor weather down South. Are we nearing the end of chairs yet?

Not entirely bad for Olympics. It is only the Winter Olympics. Curling and Ice skating aside it's hardly mainstream capture the public stuff

Pretty woeful for BBC1 and ITV for 9pm on a winter's evening, even if it was Friday.

Still two to go I think (including tonights) according to a listing magazine anyway.

I think Emmerdale would have been dented by the Opening Ceremony just finishing, but still a poor number.”

I'm not sure why you've singled out ED here.

last years ratings for equivalent day
Emmerdale - 7.05m (32.8%) down 0.84m
Coronation Street - 8.94m (38.7%) down 1.19m
EastEnders - 8.04m (34.3%) down 1.36m
Coronation Street - 8.21m (33.9% down 0.72m

yoy it's faring better than the others.

I think the six weeks was to ascertain whether the Fireworks would be considered as a show in its own right. However it has appeared on BARB 2013 top ten as the top show of the year so there is no argument now.

ahhhh. It's incredible how it was still doing really well this time last year. We must be approaching the switch off point now when everyone last year got tired of it and turned off.

EastEnders is also now going to get pinned back by clashes and scheduling so it's a bumpy road ahead.

2hrs of soap in one day looks to much to me. ITV should in my opinion cut the extra Thursday Emmerdale and remove one of Fridays cories.

I think four episodes for the top two and 5 for emmerdale is the absolute max.

With Cowell (media whore supreme) coming back, all it will mean is story after story peppering every media outlet, which is what XFUK needs surely?.

I fully expect his return will give a big boost to the shows ratings, but as to figures I will leave it to others who may watch the prog to pontificate.

I can't remember exactly but it was more prominent near the summer when Emmerdale regularly edged ahead and nearly always beat it and this went on far longer than anyone predicted, something EE still hasn't really recovered from - a combination of it trying to regain viewers and Emmerdale probably still retaining a few that it picked up last year. Hard to gauge how much of either accounts for ratings now especially in January when EE naturally should be ahead anyway

Peter Kay once again did the business last night for Channel 4.

They finished 2nd in the slot yes?

So Piers rating is bombing here, really bombing in the States angering all sorts of groups.

No wonder all he can waffle on about is cricket.

Despite the improvements in the writing storylines and direction EE is still down heavily on even its poorest year. I really think DTC has come too late for EE now, it won't bounce back and will remain on a 7m base for the next year until the anniversary.

Corrie had low figures for those eps, but to no surprise. after being p YOY last year to now down over 1million - surely ITV are going to start to notice the downward trend. It would help if EE was rating better, then it would make Corrie's ratings look poorer enticing to take action. To improve writing I think 1 episode of Emmerdale and Corrie should be cut, therefore giving ITV the incentive to find new hits to fill those soap-less holes.

That episode was Zainab's exit - although the thursday ep had rated higher.
It's a tricky one for EE, but I don't think they should panic - I don't watch it myself, but I'm seeing/reading lots of positive stuff about it now. If viewers have got used to watching it "out-of-time", it may take a while to get them back as overnighters.

As for your other comment about itv dropping an episode each of CS & ED - my question is, why would they?
They are consistently the highest rating programmes of the day - what incentive do they have to lose those ratings - they have nothing to replace them with that will rate any better.

Thanks D.M.N.

Shame Silent Witness ended on a low, second lowest timeshift as well with only 1.75m, I say "only" but most dramas would kill to have that as its (second) lowest timeshift. First drama episode to go under 7m for BBC One as well.

Series average was 7.38m, up 0.14m on last series (which itself was up 0.65m on the series before it)

Thanks DMN - much appreciated

Hayley's funeral eps did well - pleased about that, over 2million ahead of EE. Emmerdale still very close to EE after consolidation.

Silent Witness still good but down a bit from its usual 7m+, ending on a low. Piers Morgan not too bad but ITV should get rid of the series and only use him for big guests (Simon Cowell etc.) as one-offs.

Corrie's consolidated figures are fine but the overnights seem to be dwindling.

So even without competition, Life Stories seems to be struggling. They've done over 70 episodes now across 3 years so it's not entirely surprising. I think they'll keep Piers and the brand in some form but we probably won't see them running 14 episodes a year on Fridays at 9pm.

Piers angering those groups is probably the most worthwhile thing he has ever done. And maybe it has extended his stay on CNN - he has been there 3 years now despite the continual bad headlines. If you'd bet on him surviving this long in 2011 you might have won quite a bit of money!

Thanks for that, just wondered. So seven of the ten most watched programmes of 2013 were on the BBC.

Plus it's the Winter Olympics. Every single event in this is a minority sport in this country.

Yes, British success can pull in big big ratings - Curry, Cousins, T&D, the curling team - but otherwise there's not a huge amount of interest in it.

They would be higher if it was better quality in writing and storylines. The reason why Hayley's exit wasn't as high s it could have been, was because the eps leading up weren't s strong as they could be.

Same with EE, people on here were defending it saying it was time shifting more and that here was no ratings worry - however that's only because it was poor and viewers needed not to watch Live broadcast. If Corrie up its quality soon ratings will rise, otherwise they will keep decreasing.

EastEnders is timeshifting less these past few weeks. Corrie is timeshifting more but overnights are lower some nights. Still doing okay.

Thanks DMN.

Corrie regularly over 9m, EastEnders stuck with middling ratings.
