They've chosen to advertise their younger skewing shows between two shows that attract younger viewers. How shocking. Bit desperate, Andy. Every day your posts become more and more like Samuel's.

Not at all. If DOI can get almost 7m and is now classed as a flop - following a huge marketing campaign, The Voice should be able to get 8m against much easier competition. Splash and TMO are hardly BGT.

I am not so sure. I see the logic but 8m+ overnight shows are very rare and The Voice has a tarnished brand. It should do better but 7m overnight consolidating to 8m+ would be very good and a big increase on its own. I dont think you can just ignore all that has happened to the show and the ratings in the past.

Substantial child audiences for both, still...

Last year away from BGT, The Voice got a high 7m figure and 9m in the finals for some Blind Auditions. It should be aiming for slightly higher plus it is January. So I still think 8m is the target.

Samuel is Bagpuss and Andy is like the other toys in the shop. When Samuel appears so does Andy. It's quite endearing really to have a fan follow you around like that.

4.25m consolidated for New Year's Eve Holby, up from 3.75m (18.5%) overnight which included River City. Big timeshift; it normally only just about manages to equal the overnight in the officials, making up for ~400k lost Scots by adding about the same number of recordings.

Incidentally, that episode of Holby was shown in Scotland before the rest of the UK, at 23:15 on Monday 30th.

An update regarding the promising new US sci-fi drama Helix. January 20th is now 100% confirmed to be the UK launch date, and Channel 5 will be showing a double episode premiere as well, same as SyFy in the States. Bit On The Side will be going out abnormally late as a result.

21:00 CELEBRITY BIG BROTHER
22:00 NEW: HELIX
23:50 CELEBRITY BIG BROTHER'S BIT ON THE SIDE

Shame from a ratings point-of-view as a lot of people will now timeshift it.

I'm so pleased that the 7.39 managed to perform well across Monday and Tuesday, with it managing to hold onto all its audience across Parts 1 and 2. It was a brilliant drama, well written with some brilliant acting.

I was basically highlighting that Waterloo Road obviously has a large children skew, which will be why it keeps getting commissioned, the complete opposite to normal BBC1 drama. (Probably because the older more discerning BBC1 viewer has long since realised how poor it is thesedays)

No criticism of EastEnders at this point.

Depressing for ITV - only four out of the day's top 20 shares, even including +1. Oh well, it was a Tuesday.

That's the only reason. I'm fairly young but have finished school and all that but still most people I know do watch it. It's young demos are fantastic, if I remember from a chart someone posted they showed me why it keeps getting commissioned. Tonight's episode was a great improvement over the last few episodes, due to:
Spoiler
Gabriella, a new wayward pupil, who has what looks to be a thrilling stalker storyline coming up

As much as people talk about The Voice being a tainted brand its worth remembering that the series two final (in the middle of June) finished up with just shy of 8 million viewers so clearly audiences haven't completely abandoned the show. In truth the changes to the coaching line-up should have been enough to see it open up year-on-year even its old slot but couple that with the move to January and the resulting weaker competition then the potential is certainly there for it to open substantially bigger than it did last year. That doesn't mean that it will of course. The Voice is a tricky beast to predict right now.

So are they showing it on the EPG as

22:00 Helix
23:00 Helix

Or just as two episodes moulded together? If the latter, your right it will be disappointing ratings wise no doubt about it. I see Canadian drama Played is now scheduled for 17 January at 10pm on 5USA, looks great from the promo I must say!

On another note, I actually think Waterloo Road will dent CBB in the first thirty minutes of tonight's show. Both want the younger demographics.

It would need around a 35% share to get 8m (if my sums are right), surely that should be fairly achievable opposite Splash rater that Takeaway?

While I can see why they've opened with the double episode its a peculiar decision and highlights one of the downsides to the Big Brother platform. Could they not have put the double episode on consecutive nights? What do they have lined up for the 21st another Autopsy doc?

Overnight and official ratings for Series 1 and 2 of The Voice.

I personally believe that if the first episode doesn't rate between 7.5-8 million considering the amount of promotion then something isn't right.

I'm fairly young too and everyone I speak to watches it as well. It does seem to have a loyal young following despite not being all that popular with the public at large.

"The Voice" will do really well in its new position. "Splash" is not going to give it competition after all if last weeks opening episide is anything to go by so it looks like "The Voice" is going to have an easy start for the first time in its history on BBC One. It could easily get 8 to 9 million in a cold winter slot. Its been broadcasting while the sun shines for its past two seasons so its bound to do well

I agree. 7.5m should be the minimum for The Voice in terms of a launch overnight. And it also needs to try and keep viewers after the Blind Auditions end.

A reminder of Waterloo Road's demos (from rzt's chart covering the episode on Thursday 10 October 2013):

C4-15: 491k (16% skew)
16-34: 649k (21%)
35-44: 458k (15%)
45-54: 499k (17%)
55-64: 293k (10%)
65+: 630k (21%)
Total: 3.02m (100%)

To their credit the live shows did grow week-on-week last year although admittedly there was only three of them. The Voice is a bit of an odd show in general because the final both years has rated noticeably better than the shows that precede it in the run which would suggest the audience is still interested and paying attention even if they aren't watching.

It's just a very odd show in general. I'd have happily banked my savings on the show dying after it lost out to Takeaway for its Series 2 premiere. It then went and grew 3 or 4 weeks on the trot, including the week it wound up head-to-head with BGT! And as you say. It's revived itself from the apparent dead for both of its finales so far, too. Just weird, quite frankly, so I'll be avoiding any bold statements about it on Sunday morning!
