Ignoring the issues that "Coronation Street" are tackling for a moment, is this part of the reason that there is a fluxuation in its viewing figures or will this story have no effect on its audience retention and ratings. I have heard some soap producers speak on the subject of killing characters off in serial dramas and tend to avoid death scenes sometimes as they find viewers can turn off the programme for a period and it can have a negative effect on their loyality to the show. It will be very interesting to see the period after if "Coronation Street" also will see an unsettling in its viewers
I think the same debate ran through killing off Matthew in "Downton Abbey" but it returned with a strong audience for the aftermath of the characters departure. It will be interesting to see what effect on viewing habits "Coronation Street" storyline decision has, if any.
