I don't have a problem with the realism, I have a problem with how terribly written the show has become.

The episodes just lack focus and don't really work these days. The 3 episodes of series 1 are still the best 3 episodes they made. All because they were the 3 most sharply written and concise episodes.

Plus, Cumberbatch and Freeman gave much more honest and subtle performances. But gradually they've grown into caricatures of their former nuanced characters. They now seem to spend all their time gurning at eachother and making ultra-fast mumbling retorts. The interaction between them has nosedived.

During the last series it was already starting to implode in on itself, this latest episode has continued that trend.

Irene Adler's dead , no she's alive , dead again , no alive again .

Moriarty's dead , maybe not .

Sherlock's dead , he's not dead .

Mary's dead -

trouble is when you do so many twists it means when someone really dies the audience don't really buy it .

.

I don't know whether it's just you! Given the level of daft criticism so far it could be hundreds or even thousands of you that are absolutely wrong.
No one's wrong. If something didn't work for somebody then they're right in that their subjective opinion about that can't be wrong.
It could be the case that something wasn't communicated effectively in the story which led them to not enjoy it as much as they may otherwise have done. It doesn't make anyone wrong for feeling that way.

Personally I think it was disappointing. Not terrible, better than other things, okay to watch, but a step down according to its own standards. My main criticism is that it was a bit dull, meandered about in an uninteresting way, and the story wasn't engaging to me as previous stories have been. It just wasn't compelling as it has been in the past.
How does somebody prove to me that I'm wrong about that if that's how I felt?

Well, I've checked through all the replies and I can't recall seeing anyone mention this...

In the trailer for the next episodes there is a shot of four(?) nurses wheeling a trolley or bed or something - the third nurse (even though she's wearing a nurse's surgical mask) looks suspiciously like Mary.

I'm assuming this is a flashback as John, being an experienced Army doctor, would spot a fake shooting in half a second.

I also have a theory that Sherlock WAS wearing a bullet-proof vest and was deliberately goading Norbury to shoot at HIM thereby saving anyone else from being shot as she would likely only get off one round. As I said - just a theory and probably wrong. (But I'm certain the last-but-one nurse is Mary )

I wouldn't find any of this to be a surprise within Sherlock anymore. We'll find out that Mary/Watson/Mycroft planned the whole thing. Norbury was left alive deliberately as someone to testify that Mary was dead, just in case any of the other 2 were still alive from the AGRA squad (why else would one of the police have shot her after she shot Mary?). Mary has a new secret ID & this time Watson is in on the fact that someone isn't dead & Sherlock isn't. Mary's video message will have some hidden meaning for Sherlock to cotton on to later & no-one will be at all interested!

If that isn't a vicious circle, or even vortex! We make a programme so clever that only clever people can follow it, but they are so clever they figure out all the weak spots, so the programme will have to be even cleverer...and so on, ad infinitum
Maybe it's a cunning plan so that those not paying attention still enjoy the show & those that are get bored & stop watching. That way the viewing fig's stay at a reasonable level but the writer can spend much less time developing an actual mystery to solve just to make it look like they're really clever!

I found it quite enjoyable, but not as interesting as I've found Sherlock in the past. Hopefully it's onwards and upwards from here though.

Whilst it's more amusing than a hindrance, the USB stick plothole has to be one of the most laughable I've seen in quite some time. For that USB stick to end up in a house in Reading - a Georgian potter would have had to have seen it fall out of the base of a bust of Margaret Thatcher, think that the USB stick was meant to be there, after a raid, put it back in, seal it, put the base on the bust, and ship it out. I don't think farfetched quite cuts it.

I'm still struggling with how Sherlock made the intuitive leap from the evidence of two kinds of vinyl found in the car to someone disguising themselves as a car seat - as you do.

Do try getting the context! The specific charge was that Amanda Abbington got the job through nepotism. As a matter of fact, not opinion, this is wrong!

I did not like the fight, it was too much of a "real" fight (in want of a better word) than we are used too when it comes to Sherlock.

Hos fights usually ends fasts, and are elegant, because he predict his oponents moves.
All the fighty bits totally lost me. I know I'm in a minority but I have no interest in watching people punch eachother's lights out or scenarios in which every other person has a gun.

Marcia Warren was magnificent though; she managed to make her "no I don't think so" - shoot - totally believable.

God, such horrible spelling
No one noticed until you drew attention to it.

No. Just no. Personally I am finding their reliance on Moriarty to become boring. Things just seem to be going in a loop when it becomes to his supposed "big plan" for Sherlock. Can't believe it has been five years (in our time) since he died and they are still going on about him.

Although I am sure there was a theory that Moriarty was indeed "Richard Brook" and that someone hired him to become Moriarty. Was it ever explained how he managed to fabricate his past history as Richard Brook being an actor and children's entertainer?

Just watched it. Wow that was poor. A really long 90 minutes. Hard to even begin with the list of what was wrong with it.

I'm afraid if it doesn't have Jeremy Brett playing the lead role then it's not Sherlock.

Will Mary come back. I don't know how long ago Freeman and Abbington split up in real life but if it was a bad marriage breakup would she come back and play Mary again in the future.

Just seen it - absolute rubbish.

What a waste. Series 1 & 2 were deeply flawed in some of the stories, but there was so much promise.

Gutted, but alas not suprised after series 3.

Yes, there are still very many of them, both the larger K2 variety and the smaller K6.
The one where they are trying to get the bloodhound to move is a K2.

Wow I thoroughly enjoyed that. Great story with lots of twists and turns.

I only twigged it was the secretary when they arrested her boss - Lady Whats-her-name.
Why would the secretary be in that scene otherwise?

Mary doing the convoluted escape routine, only to he found by Sherlock was funny, then poignant when you realised he brought her home to London to die

Haven't read the thread, as it's bound to be full of the usual professional windbags moaning, and I haven't the patience.

Well-done Sherlock makers - this episode had me on the edge of my seat, and guessing all the way
People are moaning because of they way it has gone downhill rapidly since series 2...how you can say well done the makers of Sherlock for this episode is baffling, knowing how good it used to be.

To be fair, I guessed that one, based on that car ad that does the same thing.

BTW - I've seen a few people mention the USB stick falling out of the bust. I think they mentioned that as in the original Six Napoleons, it was put into setting clay, which would have been enough to hold it in place.

Although given that they were talking about Ostalgie (which I happened to read about the other day before the episode aired), it does seem odd that busts made to satisfy the appetite for memorabilia in the former communist states were ALL shipped to the UK.

One last thing - My mum is a Rosamund Mary, who changed her name from Mary Rosamund, and I just have to correct Molly to say that the original meaning of the name Rosamund is actually something like 'horse enclosure' Though I also feel like I have to say that if you're supposed to be in deep hiding, calling your baby daughter after your original identity is not what one might call subtle.

That's interesting. Like Molly, I always thought it meant "Rose of the World". There's a rose called Rosa Mundi which means that.
