I know this is simplistic, but could it be based on the actress's real name, Amanda (G R) Abbington?
You could be right - however, she was born Amanda Jane Smith (I don't know where the Abbington came from, unless it is just her stage name?). Her daughter's name with Martin Freeman is Grace...

to stop him talking ? do you mean she meant to kill him ?
I did really like the episode, but I agree with the point that I think you're making there - as I said earlier, I don't think the part written for Mary fitted her, nor did it seem very well thought out - she either meant to kill Sherlock to stop him talking, or else she needn't have shot him at all.
In the end, OK, it was just a plot device - they needed a reason for Sherlock to resort to murder; a reason he needed to protect John, but for me that part was a tiny bit sloppy.
I thought there were some powerful moments in the episode though, that made up for where other parts seemed to fall down.

Re bib. As I understood it, as he was a powerful newspaper magnate, he could print whatever he wanted, and people would believe him. He didn't have to prove anything.
I can see what the poster was getting at. It probably wouldn't work in the real world. Under English defamation law Magnussen would need to prove that his defamatory statements were true (as a defence).

But of course, this is fiction, and a little thing like that didn't bother me much. It was clear he operated on the belief of his victims that he held sensitive information on them, and they never had any reason to question the authenticity of his claims given his excellent memory.

On the whole, I enjoyed the finale. There seemed to be a lot going on and less mystery/intrigue than I would have liked, but it still left me open-mouthed on more than one occasion and I loved the dialogue. Not bad.

Er she did fatally hurt him as he actually died. He only came back for John, and, despite the fact that she almost killed Sherlock for no reason at all, as she could have just left the building the way she came in and left him with Magnussen, he forgave her and so did John, which was somewhat unbelievable to me. To me the emphasis on Mary has spoiled this series and her being pregnant was the end. John is married a number of times in Canon and never has any kids. I was hoping someone would kill her. When she suddenly sagged in his arms in Sherlock's Parents place, I got all excited thinking, oh great, someone's poisoned her and she's dying, but no-----

Was originally looking forward to more but I am not bothered now. I don't want to see a Mary and John and infant. It's not my idea of enjoyment. I have 10 kids and try to avoid pregnancy and infants in my viewing. My kids are fantastic but I like to escape when I watch TV.

I liked it when it was just John and Sherlock. His wives did not feature much in the original stories. I quite enjoyed the episodes but the first two series were, to me anyhow, far better. I don't like the John, Sherlock and murdering Mary scenario.

I hope Moriarty comes back and kills her.
Re bib. My take on this scene. She had gone to CAM's office to threaten him to hand over the files on her, not to kill him. She presumed that killing him would just cause the information about her to be released. (Wasn't he pleading with her, or pretending to, when Sherlock was listening in?). Once Sherlock disturbed her, the first thing she did was to ask if John was there, as the last thing she wanted was for him to find out about her background. Once she knew that he was, then she had to appear to kill Sherlock, or at least attempt to. If she had let Sherlock go free, then CAM would suspect her of being in league with Sherlock. If she was some sort of assassin, why wouldn't she just kill Sherlock without any qualms. So this is what she had to appear to do to satisfy CAM.

She still didn't want to kill CAM, but needed to "kill" Sherlock. As she was such a good shot, she chose a point which would appear (to CAM) to be trying to kill Sherlock, but actually give him a chance to survive. She then knocked CAM out so she could call an ambulance for Sherlock and escape.

She did all this thinkking and action in a second or so, as it was the only logical thing she could do to save herself and Sherlock.

Once she escaped, CAM would have even more juicy evidence against her, so he wouldn't retaliate against her. He had even more opportunity to blackmail her. Also, it adds to the pressure points - it gives CAM even bigger holds over Sherlock, John and Mary.

No; she just had to stop him talking long enough for her to get back to him and negotiate his silence. Which she did, at his hospital bed. Knocking him unconscious probably wouldn't have given her enough time.

He was on much safer ground if the things he printed were actually true, though; and the victims knew they were true, knew he knew, and also believed he had evidence that could prove it. That would make it hard for them to deny, hard to sue over it.
As a blackmailer, it's surely better not to print anything at all (it's just the threat that's needed). Once details are out in the open, the blackmailer wouldn't have any further hold over the victim.

Can everyone start rewatching the episodes to see if Moriarty was in the background anywhere? Hence, "did you miss me?"
That's an interesting thought. Now come to think of it there was a lot of emphasis on 'did you miss me?', especially being asked again after the credits.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the initials on the stick 'A.G. RA' - I didn't think the last two had full stops. Don't know if it makes a difference, but maybe her initials are AG?

And speaking of nepotism, Moffat casting his own son as young Sherlock was too much. He didn't even have a resemblance to BC. I'm sure they could have found a more appropriate child actor, instead of literally keeping it in the family. In the last few years I've tended to feel that Moffat makes his episodes for himself, rather than for the audience. Doctor Who has mostly become a pile of self-congratulatory wank, and I don't want Sherlock to follow suit.
Do you think Moffat is the only writer who has ever done this, many top writers and producers have done this but you probably haven't noticed or cared. it happens a lot. Why is it such a crime if his young lad wanted a small part in the show. people are looking for any excuse to crucify the writers, criticising one of the writers for letting his son have a very small part is a bit below the belt.

Which made Magnusson's reveal to Sherlock utterly idiotic unless he intended to kill Holmes and Watson.
Perhaps Sherlock found his pressure point

Trivia corner: did anyone else recollect that Sherlock and Mycroft's mother - and BC IRL of course - played Casandra's mum in OFAH?

I thought the whole episode was absolutely brilliant, although I wish Magnussen wasn't dead as I thought he could've been developed a bit more and become a great villain (even if he did look like Sven Goran Eriksson)
The twist re: Mary was fantastic, as was Molly bitch-slapping Sherlock. If I'm honest though, I'd like to see a bit more of Lestrade in series 4 as I love the way he & Sherlock interact with each other.

Sorry, I assumed those initials would be understood in this forum and thread. Benedict Cumberbatch, In Real Life and Only Fools And Horses.

On reflection I feel that the Magnusson character was a mish-mash. Was Mikkelsen a late addition?

I just felt the part was screaming out for an Antipodean actor (crass and brash)- not just because of the first scenes, with the character thumbing his nose at a select committee, but later - when he pees on the fireside.

It seemed unlike the character we'd been presented with (ice cold, creepy, Scandinavian). But you could imagine a rich Australian tycoon doing that.

Might be a bit obvious if they used an Australian?

It was already obvious who it was meant to be. At least in terms of foreign newspaper proprietor. Who else could it be?

But surely it can be taken at many levels. You can watch it as a piece of escapist adventure. It isn't necessary to micro-analyse the plot. The decision is the viewers'.
To be able to watch it on many levels it would be necessary to be able to micro-analyse the plot.

All 3 episodes were brilliant and over all too quickly. Enjoyed yesterdays episode, now the long wait for the next series.

You wouldn't be surprised if some loudmouth Aussie pissed in a fireplace though. A stoic Scandinavian doing it is more unsettling and you're wondering what this guy is capable of. Who would you have cast?

Andrew Scott appears after the credits so Im thinking Moriarty will be back in some shape or form...otherwise they wouldnt bother adding that clip. That character was made for that actor...or other way round!

The Daily Mail was outraged by this episode so it must be good!
