I said seen or referred to. He is mentioned by name in s1e01 and communicates with the villain via chatroom in s1e02. Who cares that he doesn't have much screen time in s1e03? The whole plot still revolves around him.

Showing him at the end of season 3 is making him relevant again. Like you, I doubt he will actually come back from the dead, but they are none the less making the character relevant.

My objection to Series 3 is, I admit, the concentration on Mary. There was too much Mary for me, and making her try to kill Sherlock and all that CIA business put me off. I also missed Lestrade. He was hardly in it.

Read an interesting post yesterday which analysed whether Mary actually intended Sherlock to die. It concluded that she did, and we must remember that she said she would do anything to stay with John, or something like that. This presumably includes trying to kill Sherlock again. She intended him to die slowly. That was why she shot him where she did. She was surprised in the hospital that he was still alive and almost dead as he was, she threatened him again. Her character and behaviour and taking up so much time ruined the series for me, plus, of course, the plot holes, of which my ever helpful OH (that's a joke) has now pointed out 13 to me.

Overall verdict on series 5/10. Sherlock's mind palace was a brilliant bit of acting and directing and I enjoyed John's stag night. Must admit I have never been that fascinated with Martin Freeman. My favorite characters are Sherlock, Lestrade, Molly and Mrs Hudson. I love Mrs Hudson. She reminds me of my late Mum and Lestrade is quite gorgeous in a middle aged sort of way.

Anyhow, if people loved it, I'm glad but I didn't.

You're looking forward to the new show then---- don't know what they're going to call it, Morstan maybe? (er that's a joke) I prefer Sherlock and John, I didn't care if they introduced a wife, after all he has one in the books, but I didn't want to have 3 episodes about her. Still, each to his own. I'm pleased it was a success but as far as I am concerned it ended with season 2. I will keep on eye on season 4 just in case though.

Wasn't the whole point of Mary befriending Janine in the first place to get access to Magnussen?

I really liked this series. Especially the last two episodes.
But I think that there was a lot that didn't click with me as well as the first two series.
I think that the plot-related elements weren't as tightly written as they were in the first two series.

I may be wrong, but I don't recall anywhere near the same amount of discussion where many posters have asked "Hang on,..does that really work?" in the first two series' threads.

We don't know how Mary broke in so we have no way of knowing how Janine was useful. Maybe she got information out of her that was useful in planning the break in.

Ah yes, you've jogged my memory. You're right, she did seem surprised. She and John hugged and we saw her face from behind his back and her face looked more like she was worried that she'd be found out.

That's true, but I think that the writer of that episode should have hinted at what that may have been.

If the fans are filling in the blanks to answer questions like that then the writers can end up relying on 'fanwank' to fill in the details for them. Which I don't think is an ideal place to be in.

As I said, I think that this series suffered a bit from the writing not being as tight as it was in the first two series, and concentrating more on spectacle to distract viewers' attentions from the finer details in some cases.

In my opinion a solidly entertaining and enjoyable series, but flawed.

Maybe the break in will be explained/shown in the DVD extras. Personally it doesn't worry me any, but I can see how details like that might bug others.

Yes, it has changed. Some people like the change but I don't. I don't think series 3 was awful, there were parts that I thought were very good but I just don't like the way series 3 went. I don't like, among other things, that John is now married to a murderer, ex muderer or otherwise, for a start. Er, I will do anything to keep John she says after trying to kill his best friend. Oh dear.

Exactly. People saying "it's not changed much" are just being willfully ignorant, IMO. The show is now almost unrecognisible compared with its former incarnation. As you said, the real issue is whether you prefer the old show or the new one (people who say they like both are just shipping the Sherlock/Watson characters and couldn't give too hoots about the storyline). As yet I've not found anyone I know personally who enjoyed the new series at all.

Seeing as she's supposed to be a trained assassin or similar, if she trying to kill Sherlock, h would be dead.

That makes sense, totally. Also shows Magnusson that she means business. The fear factor. Sentiment was never a part of it.

As for the other points made here I enjoyed this series as much as the other two, for differing reasons. I loved the softening of Sherlock and the consequential slips in judgement/deduction that ultimately ended in him taking a bullet and firing a bullet for john.

I loved him as a character before, I love him more after this season. But that's just me.

....in that case I feel rather insulted by the poster who implied you can't enjoy series 3 if you enjoyed series 1/2 unless you were "shipping". I assumed it was a derogatory term, but wasn't sure.

Why does enjoying all 3 need to be such an issue? I realise there has been a shift in emphasis for series 3, but I actually like change. I don't enjoy the same format being repeated over and over, which is why I tend to become bored and give up watching programmes which follow the same pattern year after year.


Not sure what I'm going to be watching tonight, maybe I'll give the new Musketeers thing a try.

'Shipping' tends to mean imagining/wanting two characters in a tv show or film to be in a physical/emotional/sexual relationship whether or not they are within the actual show or film.
Also, is used by people who write fan fiction, who are predominantly 'supposed' to be teenage girls.
