I know that but was it established in the show's canon?
Yes, there have been references in the show itself.

I enjoyed it, very glad it turned out the episode wasn't some random standalone and actually was part of the series and the past was a construct of Sherlock's mind.

Though it doesn't really move the story forward, its more of a playful fun side story to hold over until the 4th series.

I wish they kept it pure Victorian and didn't tie it into the modern series. I saw Sherlock waking up on the plane coming a mile away from the moment the episode started, but I still hoped it wouldn't happen.

Sort of ruined it a bit for me. We're not going to get a new series for a bloody long while and the scenes set in the present day ultimately didn't add anything, so why bother including them? It feels like a cop-out because Moffat/Gatiss went for a cliffhanger they had no real answer for in S3.

Since always. It was morphine, cocaine and opiates to escape the “the dull routine of existence.”

Oops sorry.

Well, definitely last episode when he was in the drug den thing. But I think it has been implied before then?

I really enjoyed it, but I agree it would have been better as a stand alone. I thought the Victorian story was great. It was just a fun 'ghost' story.

What a really fantastic episode! I thoroughly enjoyed every minute, although I do agree there was a bit too much time spent in the modern setting. I would have probably just had him waking up in the modern setting at the very end, but I can't complain too much because it was a really great episode.

Can't wait for Series 4!

Sherlock Holmes was always a drug addict. It was in the original books.

I'm sad to say I didn't enjoy that.

'Reichenbach Falls' was the last best episode for me. The last series, and this tonight... they've gone too far up themselves, for their own good.

I enjoyed it but I suspect, unlike other people on this forum, I don't watch tv programmes so I can have something to moan about.

It was obvious that it was a dream from the scene in Mycroft's club but I enjoyed the explanation of the crime coupled with Sherlock's obsession.

Awful. Just utterly awful.

All about the writers looking to demonstrate just how funny and clever they are.

If there is a series 4, then it isn't for me.

And like others, I thought the first series was superb.

Can we just all agree to pretend that that episode never happened?

It was ok, but it felt like it was trying to be too clever for its own good.

A standalone Victorian episode would've been great, the modern scenes ruined it slightly for me.

It was all a collective DS bad dream.

Bobby Ewing did it better though.

Any chance they can bin off the godawful Mary for the next series?

A little too contrived perhaps?
