This is the week that EastEnders turns twenty years old - it started twenty years ago on Tuesday February 19, 1985. During this week Foreigner was number one with 'I want to know what love is'.

The EastEnders story began back in 1983 on the 14th March. Julia Smith & Tony Holland met with 'David Reid' who was the Head of Serials at the BBC - he wanted the the Beeb to produce its first weekly popular serial. The ideas that had already been sketched were set in a mobile home park and another in a shopping arcade.

Jonathan Powell who took over from David Reid, later suggested that they should do a soap about 'London today'. On 1st Feb 1984, Julia & Tony gave him their blueprint. An ongoing serial about the life of a community in the East End of London. While the building of the square went underway at Elstree, Julia & Tony set about creating & casting 23 characters. The show needed a name, it had been given the working title East 8 but Julia realised that the perfect name lay in the phrase she'd used whilst casting - 'Only genuine East Enders need apply'.

17 million viewers tuned into the first episode.

'Stinks in 'ere!' were the first words spoken in EastEnders by Den Watts.

This thread is for discussion of all of this weeks episodes of EastEnders, since its a special occasion & also has big storylines running through it for the first time in a while! But this thread is also anything which relates to its past 20 years.

At the Risk of getting the predictable response 'It won't be here next year let alone in 20 years time', I wonder what will be going on in 2025 for the 40th Anniversary of Eastenders!

I should Imagine they will be killing of Den Watts (76) for the third time who has recently risen from his grave in the Queen Vic Celler.

All I wnat to know is WTF were the producers thinking in 1998 when they killed off Tiffany Mitchell AND Cindy Beale. Its hard to believe that this was the choice of the producers and nothing to do with the actresses. Both Martine Mc Cutcheon and Michelle Collins were willing to stay on the show and later criticised the shows bosses for the axings. Mc Cutcheon said she heard about Tiffany being killed off on the radio and Collins maintained producers were afraid of having strong female characters.

Why didn't we see Zoe tell everyone at home she had a miscarriage? Surely they would have been a bit suspicious if she walked in and just announced it without telling them when it was actually happening or without telling them she had been at a hospital?

PP, I agree - I think it would have been fitting and common sense to have included that after all the harping on they've done about it over the weeks..

Yeah I was just expecting even a small scene at the beginning with her explaining it to the family.
