To see Dancing On Ice end is very sad for me and many of us, but it had to eventually. Maybe not this soon if they hadn't let the show become so stale, but that's another thing altogether. Yet it was amazing to have ice skating and especially ice dancing featured every year on primetime TV and now that's going to be over I'm going to feel something is missing and it's the main reason I don't want the show to end.

I do wonder now if we'll ever see this kind of thing ever again As I said elsewhere there are enough dance shows about, or there have been over the years, so now they know skating can be popular I hope this isn't the end.

Torvill and Dean seem to have suggested they have other projects in the works, but could it really be another TV show? I hope so.

I've always said a similar show to DOI featuring the public could work, all amateurs who love skating (so are naturally good) but never do it as any more than a hobby. The competition could feature pair routines and solo sets, and due to their ability we'd likely see a greater performance level and set of tricks. The end result would be a cash prize and perhaps the chance to appear in a big national show. This would be so much more versatile than DOI became and give a new take on it without the involvement of celebrities.

What do we think, is this the end of skating as popular TV entertainment or will we get more?

No more than we ever see proper dancing on tv with the exception of ballet on Sky Arts).

Sadly, I don't think it's the skating that's the problem, it's the other guff and all the adverts around it. In the whole programme I would guess that there is less than 15 mins of skating, the rest is padding and irrelevant twaddle.

The only reason I watched was because of the 'celebrity' element, although must admit 'celebrity' diving leaves me completely cold.

If they could find a new angle, I would watch.

Not sure about that but would love if there were more coverage of top level competitive skating. I think for that to happen though would require some success from British skaters i.e. world & Olympic medallists which I don't see happening for the next few years at least.

Well, I would consider winning 2 European Bronze Medals successful, as the Kerrs did, but they weren't even shown on BBC TV.

The BBC is only interested in the Winter Olympics every 4 years, what happens in Skating in between times, they couldn't care less. As for next week's Europeans in Budapest - no BBC coverage (not even Red Button) and no-one there reporting. Ollie Williams will write a piece for the BBC website about the results from here. According to him, "it's not necessarily the BBC's fault" but these events charging too much for rights.
I say this, how much is it costing to cover the Women's Ashes down under? Reporter and Commentator's hotel bills and travel expenses - Australia is not a cheap country. They foist Women's Cricket, Women's Rubgy and Women's Football onto us on BBC TV and 5Live, all of which have a miniscule audience, but when Coomes and Buckland won a Gold Medal at the Ondrej Nepela event in October ( a second ranking event but still a good field with Top 20 competitors from Europe) I checked, but there was not one word about it anywhere, apart from Twitter, nothing in the Press or BBC Radio/TV mentioned it in passing in their Results Round Ups.
They talk about covering Women's Sport more, and think it has to be Sport that apes Men's Sport. It doesn't, why not cover established Sports where women compete, like Figure Skating?

To answer the OP's question, no, I don't think we'll see ice dancing as an entertainment on TV anytime soon after DOI ends. Though I completely agree with you, ITV forgot about the Skating element, which is what I tune in for, in a blaze of cheap celeb tat. I would love to see a new show with amateur 'hobby' skaters taking part. I'd much rather see those people on Splash aswell, rather than an endless stream of TOWIE bores.

I don't disagree with you per se but that's why I qualified my original statement by saying world & olympic medals simply because that is the sort of thing that would impact more with the wider public & the media. And whilst I applaud the Kerrs for what they achieved the fact is that they never got close to challenging for a medal on the world stage. Major success can definitely help attract a new audience to a sport. Look at how much more coverage cycling gets nowadays. And Gymnastics is starting to go the same way as well.

I don't see why it should be an either/or thing either when it comes to women's sports. There is room for all IMO.

What they choose to spend money on, to cover Women's Sports, which they've declared they wish to increase coverage of, is a decision that is not necessarily getting the most Viewers, and probably taken by a man.

I wouldn't imagine the rights to women's football etc. cost all that much. Perhaps it's not just the fault of the BBC but also the ISU, they should practically be giving away the rights to this. Interest in the sport in this country is not going to grow if it's just the die hard fans watching on Eurosport.
