Blimey, thats a bit of a blast from the past for me. When I lived in America I'd buy it in my local Safeway as back then it was as near a cheddar as I could get out there. Last time I remember seeing it in the UK was again at Safeway...next to the Pillsbury Doughboy

Yes, around Xmas time it was £1per little block in Morrisons. Tried some, it was ok on an oatcake.

Morrisons sell it. I wasn't too impressed. I don't like the soft texture. I was expecting something firmer and crumblier for a mature cheddar but then noticed it's produced by Kraft.

I bought some recently, as I used to really like it, years ago. Seemed more bland and rubbery than it used to. Maybe just me. Won't be buying it again though.
Try unpasteurised Canadian Cheddar, available in Sainsburys and Tesco. MUCH better |

In the early 70s, it was heavily advertised as a more sophisticated kind of Cheddar, and my Mum (along with many others) was conned into believing this. So we only had it on special occasions! Hard to recall what kind of special occasion would call for Cheddar cheese, but it was the 70s....
Would be interesting to try some now, though the fact that Kraft produced it doesn't bode well. And really good cheese never needs advertising. |
