Apologies if this has been asked before.

I am currently using UK Netflix via my Apple TV.

I have heard that the US Netflix is so much better & is available in the UK via the unblock-us thing.

How does it actually work & is there a list of what's on the US Netflix so I can see how much it costs & if it's worth the money.

Are you still able to watch stuff from the UK Netflix as well?

I had a quick look at the unblock-us site & although I'm not a technophobe I felt rather daunted by the setting up procedure as I have no clue what my router is (I have a BT homehub)

Thanks in advance to any kind people that answer my questions

You can use your UK Netflix subscription with an Unblock-us sub which costs about £3 for the UU sub.

You can sign up for a free trial on the Unblock-us website, by entering your email address in the free trial box on their website, this will give you a free 7 days trial of their service.

As you are using a BT Homehub, you would need to set up the Unblock-us DNS address on your Apple TV.
The set up guide how to do this is here

How it works is that when you use their DNS service on your devices or on your router, when you access any site or service which Unblock-us support you get routed through their servers to the site, so it allows you access to the service, which otherwise would be blocked.

You would also need to set up your computer or another device which has a web browser, as when you set up, you need to check service on their website, to ensure you are set up correctly.
You also need to use a web browser to use the Netflix Region Picker, or there are dedicated apps available for Android and iOS devices.

On their website, when you are logged in they have a Netflix Region Picker, which by default is on US, you can change to any of the Netflix regions using this picker.
Here's more information on the region picker

To change region on your Apple Tv, ensure that the device is shut down when making the change to a different region, and when you start up the Apple Tv and Netflix you will now see the new region.

There isn't a definitive list of what is available on US Netflix, but the many other regions also have lots of choice to offer, so don't tie yourself to the one region.

Unblock-us also support many other services on the Apple TV, but to get the apps for these you need to change your iTunes location to US. You don't need a US iTunes account to get these, just changing your location to US will be enough.

A full list of the supported sites and services can be found here

Quite a few of these sites and services require additional subscriptions, so these may not be accessible to you, but many are free.

It really is easy to set up, many of us on here use Unblock-us, so you'll get plenty of help if you have any problems.

The Apple TV doesn't need to be shut down to change region, just on the home screen, you can even change regions while watching another, then when you drop out of Netflix, then relaunch it will be in the new region. You only need to shut down Apple TV when you change the DNS settings and thats only once, when you first set up the DNS.

Simple way is: go to Un block us website (I use my ipad) follow instructions on there to change the Apple TV DNS. Then from their website, you can choose the region you need, then on Apple TV re launch Netflix.

So will that mean that I can then flip between UK & US or other countries?

If I pay a subscription to them do I still pay Netflix my £5.99 a month, how does the new subscription work?

I know I'm being thick here but it seems like it's a difficult thing to do (& I'm pretty good usually with stuff like that)

An idiots guide on how to...would be useful

No Netflix is £5.99 a month regardless of regions watched plus you pay Un Block Us (there are others) something like £3.00 a month it's in Canadian $ so it changes slightly month on month.

Its a breeze with Apple TV

Thanks...I fear it may not be so 'breezy' for me though. However, I am going to give it a try

Will the stuff I've added to my Netflix list on the UK one still be there?

The content in My List on your local region UK Netflix will only be available on UK Netflix.
This does not transfer with you when using Unblock-us to access the other regions.

If it did transfer, not everything on Uk Netflix is available on US Netflix, so the list wouldn't be complete.

You can however have a My List for other Netflix regions, but this would mean having a Netflix account for that region, so you would have to pay extra subscriptions.

With regards, to not shutting down the Apple Tv, as the region change can sometimes take a few minutes to take effect, sometimes the region change would not have taken effect by the time you open Netflix again. So by shutting down and restarting allows for this to happen every time without issues.

^^ True sometimes I've got to re-launch NF a few times, not often though

Once you've subscribed to Un block Us, you will have the option on their website to change your netflix regions. On the Unblock website there's instructions on setting up Apple TV, but basically you go into settings, network, manual change DNS. You change this to the settings Unblock give you in their instructions (it's the same numbers for everyone, but don't think you can just use them without subscribing, they will find out and block you). You do this change only once.

You then select the NF region you want to watch on the Unblock site via, PC, Phone, Ipad (I use), update the selection, then launch NF on Apple TV and wham you have the selected region.

Stupid question again, does that mean I can only choose a single region to watch?

For example - I pay my £5.99 subscription to UK Netflix, pay my subscription to Unblock US and choose US region and am only able to watch the US Netflix from that point on?

No you change to whichever region you want, but your list is only available for your home region.
In an evening I may watch Suits on Canada, Justified on UK and SOA on US etc.

No you can change the region whenever, and as often as you like.

Just get the 7 day free trial from Un Block US, to make sure it does what you want, if you decided to carry on it's just a rolling monthly contract.

There will be a section on their about setting up your device, I think Apple Tv is on Page 3

It's asking me to sign in to Netflix again now. Do I use my existing account?

Would this work on a WD TV Play box?
Philip Wales
10-01-2014
Yes as long as you can change the DNS settings on the WD, otherwise you need to access your router and do it from there, if you can, not all routers allow this, I know Sky's doesn't.

Morning everyone.

It all worked fine & as you all said it was really very easy to do.

I am now very happy to have Netflix US

Thank you all so much!

US is good for TV
Canada is good for newer films as is Mexico and Sweeden
Sweeden has some good TV series on it.

A friend of mine has a WDTV and he couldn't get the Netflix region change to work on this device, he contacted Unblock-us and they told him if he wanted to watch US Netflix on that device, he would have to sign up for a US Netflix account and sign into that.
Due to limitations of the device, this also may not work with European sold WDTV's

So don't be too shocked if it wont work with US Netflix.

That's the problem I'm having. Some say you can and others say you can't so I'm stuck.

So am I right in thinking that I can now switch to any of these regions as and when I want to, just by changing the country on my Apple Tv?

Which the non english speaking countries is the content still in english with/without subtitles or have they been dubbed?
Philip Wales
10-01-2014
^^no u change on the Un Block Website, where you choose USA, its a drop down menu showing 12 countries (think it's 12)

A lot will have English subtitles if they don't have a English soundtrack available.

If it's in English originally it will have English Audio, most of the time, with maybe foreign subtitles.

Ahh ok & that's how I change back to UK as well?

...and there was me thinking I'd got this sussed

I was surprised that Modern Family isn't on the US Netflix, but very happy that I can catch up with the last 2 seasons of Weeds
