Strong Female Characters

Some of my favourite characters in recent 'Who' also happen to be females these were:

Miranda Cleaves - The foreman in The Rebel Flesh
Captain Adelaide Brooke - The Waters of Mars

I found it refreshing that these characters stood up to their respective Doctors, refusing to just listen to this stranger who entered their world, didn't let him take control. Both actresses played the roles with real steel, their characters showed leadership and drive and responsibility for their team. The most important point though they weren't just there to "scream", "yell" and tell the Doctor off. Also unlike River who was also a strong character, they weren't their to annoy the Doctor and try and steal the scene (note I don't hate River so not bashing her)

It was also helped that in my mind both these stories were really strong too, yes there were minor irritating things "gadget gadget" and the poor special fx scenes in rebel flesh. However I think there is some great dialogue, sometimes with no dialogue at all.

Anyway - I wanted to know if there were strong female characters in Classic Who? I immediately think of Barbara, she was her own woman, but not as strong as these two characters perhaps. The Aztecs was her crowning glory in my mind. I have yet to reach Tom Baker in my journey through classic Who so not sure if Romana was a strong woman or was just another "Doctor, Doctor, what's going on" type of character?

Any input appreciated.

If you haven't seen it already, go back and watch Barbara in The Edge of Destruction/The Brink of Disaster. She doesn't just stand up to the Doctor: she smacks him down in a way that we have never seen since. I think it's fair to say that the Doctor has never again been treated with such anger and contempt.

And the beauty of it is that she is entirely right.
