Interesting that he chose to do it on an elevated platform though - ie an improvised stage. I briefly saw Jim on the opposite one, copying the 'moves' (such as they were), but the footage shown was mainly of Lionel, just as he would have intended.
I think he sees Jim as his main competition in the 'Veteran Entertainer Category' and therefore wants rid of him, as he thinks it is only right and proper that he should win the show, on the basis of all the decades he's been involved in Showbiz and he's danced with Sammy Davis Jr, doncha know?
He's a smiling assassin with the biggest ego in there imo.”
Think I am starting to agree with this. It seems he wants to be the house 'grande dame', the one the younger folk all come to and sit in awe of his 'hilarious' stories and bon mots. I bet in reality he would quickly become a huge bore as he isn't actually very witty or entertaining at all, he has just been aound a long time. I think he wants national treasure status.
Interesting that he mentions that Jim has had production companies and the shows he has done. Jim is obviously a very pro-active personality, someone who likes to be doing things and making things happen, I don't get the impression he just likes to sit about doing nothing. Although it could simply be that Lionel is irritated by someone who is an opposite personality to him, it looks more like a bit of jealousy that Jim takes away some of his shine and has probably been more successful in showbiz terms than Lionel has. When Lionel was talking about his Royal Variety show the other day I didn't get the impression he was too pleased when Jim said he was also on the show, he certaily tried to gloss over it.
Trouble for Lionel is even if Jim just sat there and just talked, he is far more quick witted so he would make Lionel's stories look even more a self indulgent bore fest than they already are. He wants to sit there like the queen mother being fawned over by the young crowd and Jim is too old and been in showbiz too long to do that.
I am on Lionel watch at the mo' to see how long he can keep the mask up.
