The 'finding Gallifrey' arc began in DOTD, as well as the possible repercussions of the Doctor changing history in TOTD.

Moffat himself said last year that he was nearer the end of his tenure than the beginning suggesting he was planning to do 2 more series at most

Oh of course but that seemed to me to be a clear gift to himself and future writers. Rather than leaving something unresolved this was setting up future years of the show.

I thought they meant the typical Eleven stuff about who blew up the Tardis etc.
