'The Complete Specials' from the Tennant era question

I have a question about this media release, it says its the 'complete' specials but it doesn't include the other Christmas specials from Tennant's era the first 3?
Does anyone know why the BBC didnt do those on there too?

It was meant as an equivalent to a 'complete series' DVD set, only for the 'Specials Year' when there was no regular series. So it really means 'The Complete Year of Specials'.

at the time it was being called the specials year and then at the end they released 'the complete specials' so it made sense then. Can see how looking at the title now though, year's later and out of context, how someone could assume it was a set of all the david tennant specials as you did

I'm not 100% certain but I think it goes like this...

Series 1 - doesn't include a xmas special

Series 2 - starts with The Christmas Invasion
Series 3 - starts with The Runaway Brids
Series 4 - starts with Voyage Of The Damned (not sure if Time Crash is on 3 or 4 box set?)

Tenth Doctor Specials - The Next Doctor, Planet Of The Dead, The Waters Of Mars, The End Of Time pts 1&2

...and I think eventually we'll see Matt's stories boxed like this...

Series 5 - including A Christmas Carol
Series 6 - including The Doctor, The Widow & The Wardrobe
Series 7 - including The Snowmen

Eleventh Doctor Specials - The Day Of The Doctor, The Time Of The Doctor (including The Night Of The Doctor and The Last Day)

that's correct as of now except for the 11th doctor specials and the fact the doctor, the widow and the wardrobe is in series 7 boxset ,time crash is in series 4 boxset on same disc as voyage of the damned by the way

14 eps in the S5 box,
13 eps in the S6 box,
15 eps in the S7 box?

Series 5 boxset has 13 eps.
Series 6 boxset has 14 eps including A Christmas Carol.
Series 7 boxset has 15 eps including Widow Wardrobe and The Snowmen.

Hope that's cleared up any confusion.

This is something I have been thinking about for a while.
I know this is basically just a wishlist, a bit just for fun as well, but if it ever going to be released, this is how I would do the 11th Doctor Specials/50th Anniversary Collection Boxset (However they label it):

Disc 1: The Day of the Doctor
Special Features from original release: The Night of the Doctor, The Last Day, Behind the Lens, Doctor Who Explained, 50 Year Trailer, Comic Con Trailer.
NEW FEATURES: Commentary, The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot, Night of the Doctor behind the scenes, Deleted Scenes, Outtakes, TV Trailer, Doctor Who Live: The Afterparty.

Disc 2: The Time of the Doctor
Special Features from original release: Behind the Lens, Tales from the TARDIS, Farewell to Matt Smith.
NEW FEATURES: Commentary, Deleted Scenes, Outtakes, Trailers, Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor.

Disc 3: An Adventure in Space and Time
Special Features from original release: William Hartnell: The Original, Behind the Scenes, Regenerations, Recreated Scenes, Deleted Scenes.
NEW FEATURES: Commentary, Trailers. Outtakes.
Also, release on bluray separately.

Disc 4: Doctor Who: The Ultimate Guide, The Science of Doctor Who with Prof. Brian Cox, Doctor Who at the Proms 2013
SPECIAL FEATURES: Proms Encore, P.S., Death is the only Answer.

Disc 5: Doctor Who: The Doctors Revisited, All 11 episodes.
SPECIAL FEATURES: Highlights of the Official 50th Celebration at the Excel Centre.

What do others think? Hope I haven't missed anything out.

this makes a lot more sense than what they are proposing to release when most already own all the previous christmas ep's, but as someone who isn't to bothered about all of the extra stuff i'd rather they did a cheaper 2 disc version with just day and time of the doctor, with night of the doctor and the last day as special features on the day of the doctor disc. then they could do the version your suggesting, for a higher price, for those who need all the extra stuff.

intersting question but as day of the doctor is completely unique and therefore wouldn't follow normal christmas special rules, would it have any chance of being on the series 8 boxset??

come to think of it, will time of the doctor even be on the series 8 boxset because even though that's what they'd normally do they might think it strange to produce a set with capaldi on the cover where the first ep (or possibly two) is of smith.

what does anyone think??

That would make sense as the other Smith specials are with series 6 and 7.
I will be a bit annoyed though, as I have already brought the 50th special and pre-ordered the Time Of the Doctor that comes with the other Christmas specials on BluRay, so I would then end up doubling up to get 'An Adventure In Space And Time' on BluRay!

Thats a very good point! I think personally they made a bit of a mistake in doing Name of as the last episode of the 7th series.
If they had done a Trillogy of 'Name of...', 'Day of...' and 'Time of...' on 16th, 23rd and 30th November 2013 and a separate Christmas special on Christmas day 2013, then they couldve done a boxset of 50th anniversary year specials and include 'An Adventure in Space and Time' too!

The Specials Boxset for Tennant makes perfect sense and always did. Its the Smith one that is silly.

Not when you come to buy it 4 years later and you are thinking its all Tennant's Doctor's Specials!

Maybe! But I blame the confusion caused by them using Smiths Xmas specials in an Eleven boxset. As has been said there was a clear distinction between THE specials and XMAS specials. But I understand the confusion.

Personally I think the Eleven specials boxset is ridiculous.

Yes the Eleven or Matt Specials Boxset doesnt make sense and I wouldve liked to have been able to build my Dr Who collection by buying each Special that was attached to a series, but it looks like when I do I will just end up doubling up!

The dvd releases stopped making sense after David tennants last episode. We had the 1st 4 seasons complete dvd boxsets and the year of specials on dvd. After that it went a bit silly. The 5th season boxset had the next time trailers removed for no good reason. Commentaries on episodes became rationed. We had the farce of the doctor, widow, wardrobe not being on the complete 7 set then it was after everyone kicked up a big fuss. No 50th boxset, just a vanilla release of day of the doctor. Finally the time of the doctor and other matt smith specials but no day of the doctor! Meanwhile quality stuff like the fiveish doctors reboot remains unreleased yet the doctor, widow wardrobe gets its 3rd release. For completest sake I have ordered the time of the doctor but will be using the disc with the other 3 specials as a frizbee. Don't expect things to make sense.

It's not even on the Series 7 Part 1 box set. I've only just realised and I'm slightly annoyed.

Well Im glad Im having to catch up, at the moment, as I can at least buy full boxsets of complete series, rather than having to buy parts.
Although having said that, when I do catch up, I think I would just wait till the whole series is out before buying.

The Afterparty will never see the light of day again. It was a disaster, a total embarrassment! Especially that One Direction bit, which had an inexplicable 15 second delay, and they hadn't even watched the episode, so had nothing worthwhile to say!

That could be edited out on the DVD/Bluray release, along with any other mentions of it, also any other bits that weren't so smooth could be cleaned up!

Buying them in parts was my choice and either way... still no "The Doctor the Widow and the Wardrobe.
