This is just a mad theory I thought out so it's probably mad. (Excuse the length)
Series 1's main enemy was the Daleks, like the 1st Doctor
Series 2's main enemy was the Cybermen and some Daleks , like the 2nd Doctor
Series 3 The Master like the 3rd Doctor
Series 4 Davros like the 4th Doctor
Series 5 had the return of the Silurians like the 5th Doctors era
Series 6 Was about the Doctor facing death like the 6th Doctors era
Series 7 had the Daleks and Cybermen and the final episode didn't seem so final, like the 7th Doctor era.
The next series is number 8, who was the 8th Doctor's main enemy? The Master.

skeptical that this is the basis on which they would be planning the series, though I admire the effort and thought put in the theory. But anyway I think and very much hope that the master will be back, and if so, then I hope that as john simm for at least a regeneration scene, although I see no reason why he couldn't do the whole episode and future ones to if he's happy to keep going. new doctor dosen't necessitate new master, in fact I think the same master, through different doctors give's a bit of continuity to an otherwise ever changing show

Your first four are sound, but the next three are extremely tenuous.

I've noticed this before too but no-one seems to take it seriously..

So far each year or so of new-who has given a particularly big nod to a different Doctor's era in terms of the big bad or story elements.
Sure there are nods to different eras of the the show scattered throughout the new series but in Davies' time with the series villains, and Moffats with series themes, there seems to be a gradual working through the different eras of the classic show, something I've been thinking about ever since way back at the start of Series 3...

--------------------------------------------

SERIES 1
Rose launched the new series perfectly, referencing previous relaunches of the show, with the presence of the Autons who appeared in the first colour story with the Third Doctor, and a glossy visual style that has more in common with the 1996 TV movie than Season 26.
But other than that this is very much “the new series” with the only classic series adversaries appearing being The Daleks, who were the main enemies of the First Doctor and the “Big Bad” for this season (though it would have been nice to have Zygons instead of the Slitheen )

SERIES 2
An appearance from Sarah Jane and K9 gives a nod to the Fourth Doctor's era but it's the Cybermen who dominate this series ...an adversary who who appeared often during the time of the Second Doctor

SERIES 3
The third series' Big Bad is the Master who was introduced as the Doctor's old enemy during the Third Doctor's tenure, and after the finale we get the new series' first multi-Doctor story (albeit a short one) in the form of Time Crash, just as the Third Doctor's era gave us the first multi-Doctor story of the classic series (The Three Doctors).
Also, if you look at this block of stories as starting with the first post-Rose episode The Runaway Bride, there's the noticeable presence of a rather big spider
The 60s are given a nod as well though with a welcome appearance from the Macra.

SERIES 4
Then we come to series 4 of the new series which sees the return of the Sontarans and Davros, who each made two appearances opposite the Fourth Doctor

2008-10 SPECIALS
Just as the changeover from Baker to Davison featured the Watcher who “wasn't quite the Doctor”, the transition from Davies to Moffat “wasn't quite a series” and began with The Next Doctor
and Jackson Lake who “wasn't at all the Doctor” ...but we thought he might be for a while.
The Master's resurrection and subsequent degradation hold a mirror to the Fourth Doctor's last season in the early 80s when the reverse happened and the appearance of Rassilon and the Time Lords in The End Of Time further salutes the Fifth Doctor's era.

SERIES 5
As in the Fifth Doctor's era we get an update of the Silurians, but there are are plenty of nods to the Sixth Doctor in terms of who the Doctor is, being considered dangerous (TOATL / TPO/TBB)and having a darker side to him (The Valeyard / The Dream Lord)

Then of course there's the SJA story Death Of The Doctor which could almost be metaphor for the 18 month hiatus in the mid 80s :/

SERIES 6a-6b
“Murder Of A Time Lord” rather than “Trial Of A Time Lord” but nontheless based around the idea of the Doctor being seen as a threat.
The dangerous time travelling female (R-word? ) and contemporary earth Cyberman story hark back to the late 80s and the time of the Sixth and Seventh Doctors, but then the questions about the Doctor's secret, talk that he lies and general darker tone (not to mention a bit of chess) all bring to mind more the time of the Seventh.
Also there's the “River was born to be a Time Lord / Ace was being groomed to be a Time Lord” parallel I've only just thought about.

SERIES 7a
I see this as really being Moffat's half-season, as other than AOTD it's more of an addendum to S6 than anything, and there are still things here that give a nod to the Seventh Doctor's tenure as that series did … a new Dalek heirachy, a shakeup for UNIT, the emphasis on the mystery surrounding the Doctor.
But also the "standalone movie" style of this chunk of stories echoes the 90s novels of both the Seventh AND Eighth Doctors (note: the Seventh Doctor novel "Blood Heat" featured a Silurian on a Dinosaur on the cover )

SERIES 7b & SPECIALS
So to series 7b and the recent Specials …and I start here at The Snowmen as I think it belongs more with this block of stories than with the first half of series 7...

The Great Intelligence arc builds a great story around what was previously a pretty daft 60s villain who had some cool henchmen, and along with the Ice Warriors adds a touch of the Second Doctor's era, and the appearance of Coal Hill School in TDOTD and the aged Doctor in TTOTD both give a wave to the First, Then of course there's the multi-Doctoriness off the anniversary special echoing those we saw under the Third and Fifth Doctors and the face of the Fourth on a future incarnation known as "The Curator". Throw in the idea of the Doctor having a dark side from the Sixth Doctor's tenure and questions about his secrets and his name from the Seventh and throughout the anniversary year the show tip it's hat to the whole of the classic series, but also in a big way to the Eighth Doctor and "the wilderness years"...

The Ice Warriors were brought back early on in the days of the Eighth Doctor prose stories in The Dying Days and the Zygons (Tennant got his Zygon story in the end )who returned to the screen for the first time in decades in TDOTD feature in the Eighth Doctor Adventures by Big Finish.
Then we have the Night Of The Doctor prequel featuring the Eighth Doctor himself and the "link in the chain" that is The War Doctor. Their stories between them (TV Movie / Night Of The Doctor / Day Of The Doctor) act as a bridge between the old series and the new (which serves as a big two fingers up to anyone who still insists on saying the new is not a continuation of the old ).

...then just to top all that, you've got several appearances from Richard E.Grant who "used to be" the "official" Ninth Doctor and John Hurt as The War Doctor who is now officially the Ninth Incarnation, so in spite of the Ninth Doctor, Christopher Eccleston not wanting to appear, we kind of got two Ninth Doctors anyway

...and the 10th and 11th...

...and a glimpse of the 12th...

... In fact "ALL THIRTEEN OF HIM!"

--------------------------------------------

...and now what Moffat's done is almost the Davies era in reverse, Matt's Doctor was Moff's answer to Tennant's and I think Capaldi is going to be a short-lived 12th Doctor who takes us to a point from which the next showrunner can start all over again
http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showt...571&highlight=

...but as I said before it's not too far fetched if you look at it like this...

I'm not saying it's part of some pre-conceived plan, It just seems to have happened naturally

Agree same master different doctor. But at the very least if it is a new master then we need to see a regeneration.

But yeah Sora, I do think the Master is due for a return, and in theory he could have escaped Gallifrey in The Day Of The Doctor when all the past incarnations ( and the 12th Doctor ) departed...

...as could any number of Time Lords come to mention it...

...the future has been changed

If the Master is the big bad for Series 8 then I think the other returning enemies might be...

Either Daleks OR Cybermen - I'd go with the Cybes, the redesign is awesome

Zygons OR Ice Warriors or maybe even both.

Thanks Shoppy I saw your original theory in another thread and it really got me thinking. Another thing that could happen by following the theory is that the story arc of Series 8 involves the Doctor being half-human

The master could be curious as to what The Doctor has been up to, watching from a distance but maybe the master will be more helpful than a hindrance to The Doctor.

I think there's a foundation for a new M.O. for the Master now ...

After what the Time Lords did to his head I can see him wanting to find Gallifrey and destroy it just as much as the Doctor wants to save it.
?

Why would he destroy something that has made him what he is? The master can change if he wants to.

It would be like the Gunslinger in A Town Called Mercy.

I`m pretty sure The Master will be returning in series 8 or series 9 but with a different actor in the role.

Rumours are rife and have been for quite a while that the character is set to make a return for the new doctor various names flying about the names I`ve come across are Charles Dance, Damien Molony though he has been linked to another role also, Warren Brown is another name who`s also doing work currently with Big Finish Doctor who and a few others but at this stage they are purely rumours but still strong indications the character is making a return in some form.

My money's on the next "Master" being portrayed by a female and/or non-white actor - as a nod to those who have asked to see such change occur with the Doctor.

isn't it often through forum's like this where someone is talking about, what they want and maybe saying a theory on how it could happen, then hey presto, through chinese wispers or presumptions it's an official rumour or is being touted by the media as something that is definitely happening

yes, true and then the rumour gets spread on forums and we all go giddy, adding more colour to the rumours and then get angry and upset when what we hoped for never actually happened

and so goes round the merry go round, until a broadcast date comes hence,

The Master should regenerate into the 10th Doctor. That would confuse the new Doctor.

well it wouldnt be the 'Master' if they cast a female they would have to rename the character 'Madam' or 'Mistress'!

Only stating what`s been going around on the net Charles Dances name has cropped up a lot in recent days as I made clear these are purely rumours nothing is confirmed either way.

But I look back to last year when Peter Calpaldi`s name cropped up across the net especially on the GB forum and that turned out to be true.

As ever I won`t take anything as fact until there is strong evidence or confirmation.
