For example, when we saw him talking to Casey shortly before their release from their little zoo, she seemed to be buying his act. But his words belied any real truth to his apologies. "I said I was sorry... for whatever I did."

Think about that phrasing. That's the way someone constructs a sentence when they don't even understand what they did--don't accept it and/or hardly understand the actual offense. It's basically "yeah, whatever".
