Freesat Recorders and Catch-up Services
Hi
Firstly, sorry if I have posted this in the wrong place but it cuts across a few of the forum sections. I currently have Sky+ which as part of my "austerity" measures I am looking to give up. One of the things I do like about the service is the catch-up facility for iplayer, 4od, etc., where the box downloads the programme for viewing at a later date. I live a significant distance from the telephone exchange and as a result my broadband speeds are low and streaming catch-up services is not possible. So the facility to download the programme, eg overnight, to view the following day is really helpful. Is there a Freesat recorder which like the Sky box records rather than streams the catch-up service? I had hoped that a Humax box would do this but their technical department have said that their boxes only stream the service. Can anyone advise? Many thanks in anticipation of your help. |

As Humax advised, all the Freetime boxes stream the catch-up content.
If you require the need to download then you'll have to keep paying Sky to do so. |

If you are organised enough to arrange to download programmes overnight for later viewing why are you not organised enought to record them off air when broadcast?

You can see this by watching your internet data usage. On my reasonably fast 20Mbps service a 1HR Iplayer HD is fully buffered in about 30 minutes. |

Sorry Gomezz...but have you never had a situation where someone at work says "Did you see xxxxx on the telly last night it was really interesting?" and you either had dismissed it, or not noticed it was on ...In these circumstances I download through catch-up.

They do stream the content but buffer it as well. If you pause the programme long enough at a guess you should have enough in the buffer to watch it without interruption.
You can see this by watching your internet data usage. On my reasonably fast 20Mbps service a 1HR Iplayer HD is fully buffered in about 30 minutes. I get a download speed of around 700kbps I wonder if iplayer is intelligent enough to buffer a sufficient amount to allow for continuous playback and also are the other services 4od etc similar in the way they buffer? |
