Android phone trying to use data?
Haven't topped up my PAYG phone since before xmas and, as a result, it ran out of credit about a week ago.
Thing is, yesterday I started getting messages saying "you do not have enough credit to use data..." etc, and I've been getting them, literally, every 10 minutes for the last 2 days. Last night I even manually disabled the data facility and the same thing is still happening. As of now, I've received 143 messages about data since I switched it off. My phone is, of course, linked into my home wifi and is still manages to update programs and receive emails etc via the wifi, so I've really got no idea why it's suddenly making such a fuss about wanting access to data, or why my carrier is so desperate to tell me I don't have the facility. I'm actually a bit reluctant to put more credit in the phone now, in case whatever's trying to use data just burns through any credit I do put in the phone. Anybody know what might be causing this sudden deluge of messages, whether there's a specific app' that's causing it or if there's some malware about that might be responsible? |

I'm not sure what network you're on, but when I was on O2 PAYG I noticed that whenever my monthly data allowance was used up (or expired), the phone would randomly start using mobile data, invoking a £1 daily charge if there was any credit left. This random data usage never seemed to happen when a data allowance was active. I never got to the bottom of what was causing it.

Your phone only has to use 1kb of data for them to apply the data usage for a day. It happened to me without me knowing and I lost about £5 before I shut off data. |

Shutting off data usage should mean no data is travelling through the mobile data network whatsoever (as, in fact, should being on WiFi). It's hard to envisage a situation where an app is still able to try to access data under these circumstances.
If you're feeling technical, it might be worth going into your APN settings and temporarily crippling them so that there is no possible way any apps could be accessing network data, and see if the message persist. If they do, the problem is at your network operator's end. If they don't, post back and we can further diagnose. |

Android has a strange override when it can reactivate mobile data even when WiFi is on to access assisted GPS data over the mobile network when normally, it's impossible to use mobile data and WiFi at the same time.
