Unbelievable...Okay I Must Be Really "Out Dated" With My Values

Okay so with my original screen name I have been on this forum since 2006. One thing I love about this forum is how diverse it was. I knew when you had an opinion a lot would agree and a lot would disagree with you. Some would be ignorant about it but some would use logical explinations and be willing to have a good debate about it without turning it into an argument or taking pot shots at people and their opinions.

Its never really bothered me much when people don't agree with me because it would make things boring if everybody agreed.

However I can't deny that some of the posts in this series have me seriously wondering about the age I really live in.

Posts like praising Dappy for his comments about it being an accomplishment for a guy to sleep with 5 women but if a woman sleeps with 5 men it makes her a w****. Even coming from the Oxford English Dictionary...

Sexism: "prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of sex."

Therefore Dappy's sentance falls under that banner. It is prejudice and discrimination based upon differences between women and men in regards to Sex. It IS Sexist. Yet there have been plenty of topics and replies on this forum not only praising Dappy but trying to justify it.

Also topics and replies praising Lee Ryan for "binning" of Casey and set his sights higher. At what point did it become acceptable whether on TV or NOT to fool around with a woman and then in front of her move on to someone else and not only justify it to others but when a deal is made out of it he then blames Casey for turning it into an issue. Its NOT big, Its NOT admirable and its does NOT make you "cool".

When I have tried saying this to people in posts I have been jumped on for looking up the definition of words, living in the past, having outdated views and being an over sensitive feminist.

Well yes I am a feminist absolutely . I am a 25 year old male and my wife to be is a very independant woman with her own business and yes does earn more money than me. (I earn plenty of my own money for the record) But I am not trying to throw anything sexist out there like I should be the earner...Im incredibly proud of what she has managed to accomplish and if she can out earn me then more power to her.

Being a feminist is irrelivant though, what is wrong with seeing women as equal and giving them props as coming through as superior when they deserve it rather than stereotyping on what some idiots think on a reality TV Show.

I think im just past the point of understanding this. If I am old fashioned or outdated then so be it if I treated a woman like how Dappy or Lee have or praise their opinions then both my parents would still be very dissapointed in me indeed and im glad they brought me up that way. Its disgusting behaviour.

Technically(strict adherence to dictionary definitions), Dappy is right to call a girl who sleeps with 5 men in a night a slut.

It's up to you if you attribute a negative connotation to the word however.

I think it may be about boy band members. Apparently the name, blame and then forgive operates on a very speedy basis.

I'm stunned by how many are actually blaming Casey for the whole thing. The stereotyping of her as a glamour model and therefore having a different value to other females is just downright odd.

Of course, the issue really is that Channel 5 stereotypes them all in the editing. They only show a tiny proportion of what's going on, and even that's often cut with a previous day if it suits them.

Don't get too hung up on the present day morals - I'm much older than you and I feel the same BUT I know that it's a tiny proportion of kids who would behave like this or think like Lee and Dappy. However many posts on here claim to admire the likes of those 2, they are only a handful of people really. There are many millions more who wouldn't condone this sort of behaviour for a moment!

So, if someone called you a slut (whether you're male or female) how would you feel?

I'm male so it would not affect me in the slightest.

But I feel like it's a dilemma a lot of women must face. If she was into casual sex and sleeping around + was aggrieved by society's double standard towards sex should she now attach a positive connotation to the word because what the word entails is exactly what she would be doing?

It's only negative because society viewed women who sleep around as low-grade and loose morally. However, if a woman didn't see it that way how can she be angered by the term?

In a lot of dictionaries it says "especially" against women. Sets up a bit of a paradox doesn't it.

I rarely post on the forum these days, as I've had some extreme reactions and quite alarming nastiness from some quarters when I've started threads similar to this.
But had to come out of hibernation to high-five "rabid-wolverine" on his thread and opening post.
I don't get it either mate. I'm a 40-something heterosexual male, and I'll just have to conclude that I'm never going to be comfortable with some of these attitudes.
With the last Celeb BB winner being somebody I found personally hugely dislikeable and was particularly proud of ****ing-the-bed, I'm kind of not surprised...
The old "well-at-least-they're-not-boring" argument only goes so far...
Anyway, can't they bring that horse who kicked Dappy in the head in as a surprise guest? I'd watch that!
Yours sincerely, Old Fogie, going back to hibernation....

People can behave how they like - men or women but society has a norm formed from the average view of how humans should act towards one another. Yes women can sleep around as long as they know that there may be some repercussions to their health/reputation and the same could be said about men. One of the big causes of spreading AIDS in the 80s was due to promiscuity - so on the whole it pays to be cautious. I think deep down both men and women don't like to sleep with someone else whose had an excessive number of other sexual partners - it's unattractive all round.

Wow. It's interesting that the person who is supposedly "the feminist" is the one worried about having "outdated" views.

Amazing. If that's the case we really are living in now, it's scary.

Some actual feminists (as a political movement) can be unpleasant and stubborn. Let's admit that. But the ideas being spitefully labeled as "radical feminism" by some of the nut jobs posting here aren't radical. I've seen post after post trying to torpedo the entire idea of gender equality with foaming at the mouth insistence that it's nothing but "sexist claims that women are always the victim". Oh please, give me a break. Not wanting to see women labeled as "sluts", "slags" and "whores" is "playing the victim"? Give me a feckin' break. I fear for the world if that's actually true. Hilariously a lot of these same posters are insisting that Lee and Dappy, when they misbehave are "just being lads". Err. Right. And apparently people pointing out the inconsistency of that is "more feminist shrieking".

Good lord.

Nah. Some or even most people maybe. Insecure people definitely. Personally I like a slut. And it's notable that men who are known to sleep with a lot of women get an outward "Ew" from women, followed by a sneaky visit.

The main thing wrong with this post is this: It's not the business of random people to APPOINT themselves as the reputation/morality police.

Not agreeing with people being very sexual/promiscuous is fine. In fact, it's more than fine. Not wanting to date them, not wanting to endorse or be associated with the decision making process of those people--all of that is fine. Hell, not wanting your kids to date them? Also a good idea.

What isn't fine are the shortcuts taken--ESPECIALLY with women--to label these people. I know Americans are told in school to read a novel called "The Scarlet Letter", but I don't think many Brits know the book. Look it up. It's very much about the unfairness and cruelty of attempts to publicly shame female sexuality. Apparently maybe British schoolchildren SHOULD be forced to read it.

Judge lest not you be judged. The Bible has a lot of crap in it, but that one phrase kind of works.
