If you make custard and eat it hot it'll be runny. Same goes for blancmange. If you let either go cold, they'll set.
This leads me to believe that school pink custard was just blancmange they hadn't allowed to set. |

It's blancmange, not custard with food colouring.

Pink custard wasn't yellow custard coloured differently, it had a faint strawberry flavour.
You can make it easily by adding hot milk to Angel Delight mix. |

No, it was different to blancmange, it was pink custard, it had the same texture as custard, I also remember the mint custard, I seem to remember having it with ginger sponge. Lovely! Could just eat some now.

If you want to make "pink custard" just take pink blancmange powder and add to milk, use less than recommended (trial and error). This will be how they did it at school.

Add strawberry nesquik to custard. I used to love a swirl of choc in my custard, now I prefer it uncontaminated.

All the custards served at school are basically just milk thickened with cornflour.
Normal Custard - Custard Powder (cornflour, flavouring & colour) + milk and sugar. Pink Custard - Strawberry blancmange powder (cornflour, flavouring & colour) + milk and sugar. White Custard - Cornflour + milk and sugar Chocolate Custard - Cornflour & cocoa + milk and sugar Mint Custard - Cornflour, peppermint extract & green food colouring + milk and sugar. |

I loved the pink custard! Think they served it with either jam tarts or sponge cake.
