Yes exactly - simple but delicious at the time.
We always had established combinations though. We only ever had pink custard with iced sponge, and we only ever had sweet white sauce with chocolate pudding.
I remember they once served jam-and-coconut sponge with pink custard instead of yellow, and it didn't go down well. It was widely discussed and condemned in the playground!
