Born December 1987 I never grew up with Doctor who, although as a family we did watch the repeats every Sunday morning on Uk Gold

Yep me too I grew up in the 90's so I was already an adult by the time the 2005 series started!
I was never told about it when I was young ether, so I didnt even see the film with McGann when it was first on!
I have since see it though.

Yes, I too was born in 1987, and while I had seen the odd old episode of Doctor Who, I never really got into watching the programme in 2005

Yeah - 15 when Rose came on, born just late enough to miss the entire thing! As in, barely more than a month after the last ep of Survival.

Liked the idea of it, when it came back, went in without prejudice, it was all a bit like, "Let's finally see what all the fuss is about." Instantly fell in love, The End of the World is the only episode I ever missed. Doctor Who never sent me behind the sofa, but I don't feel deprived.

My first full episode was the tv movie. My era was a mix of webcasts and comic relief sketches.....

I remember the 5th doctor just about. I would have been about 4 i think at the time but i definatly remember his white cricket outfit. His outfit always stuck in my mind but not old enough to really grasp what was going on.
The intro music always scared me for some reason during the 5 and 6th doctor reigns.

This is pretty much the same as me.
I was born in 1990, so I missed out entirely on the classic series, Although I was aware of it. I think I may have seen some repeats on BBC 2 and I must have seen the Paul McGann film with a friend once, because whenever someone referenced Doctor Who I always had the image of the movies vhs cover in my head. So for me I always saw McGann as the Doctor more than the others. (That's why I was so happy when he returned in Night of the Doctor.)

I had also seen the Peter Cushing Films, and his TARDIS interior was always the one I had stuck in my head before 2005.
So when I heard it was coming back, I thought that's interesting, Now i'll be able to see it properly for the first time.
The only episodes I missed since 2005 were the Unquiet Dead and The Long Game, haven't missed one since.

I also agree about the point of not feeling deprived of it, because for me one of the fascinating things was discovering the history of the show by getting some classic DVD's. Now I've nearly seen all the existing episodes and just like in the show itself, it's been the most amazing journey, and long may it continue.

My first encounter with Doctor Who was at the age of 14, I'm now 20 and I wish that it was throughout my childhood!

I was born in 1989, just a number of weeks before the cancellation. Growing up I used to have a fascination with the Daleks thanks to the second of the two Peter Cushing films, but I had a very limited experience of the franchise as a whole. Hence I always used to think of "Doctor Who" as Peter Cushing and I was very surprised to find out later on that The Doctor was an alien.

I did have a copy of Terror of the Zygons one Christmas but as a ten-year-old at the time I just couldn't get into it. I also have a vague recollection of the repeats on UK Gold but I don't think I ever got into them either.

The first series of the modern era passed me by the first time around but I decided to watch Rose on a whim in spring 2006, not long before the second series aired, and I was hooked right away. I've been mad about the show ever since.

I was born in 1988 so by the time I was old enough to watch tv it was gone. had no exposure to it at all as a child, apart from the fact of seeing the curse of fatal death on comic relief one year, and obviously not knowing what it was but I liked it and it stuck in my mind. my first proper knowledge of the show was 2005 and I was already 16 at that point.

Part of me feel's robbed that it wasn't on in my childhood but part of me is glad that I got an official start point, to jump on board with it. don't know if i'd necessarily have taken to a show that had already been going for year's, where as in 2005 it was packaged as something new
(and I think that was RTD's intention with the 'series 1 label' which i understand some were annoyed about because it was and is a continuation of the same show, but he was well aware that many of the potential audience, were of the generation who had no idea what it was, and would have felt out of the club, and unable to watch if they'd brought it back as series 30-something)

I grew up on BBC cult showings, so the Treks, Buffy, Farscape and Robot Wars, etc.

I just about remember the TV Movie being aired on a Bank Holiday and my Dad, on a trip back from London, hoping we'd get back in time to watch it. That's about it though.

I guess you can say the gap the previous generations would've filled with Dr Who was instead filled by another BBC sci-fi that imo is just a little better: Red Dwarf.

It's probably shaped my attitude to Who as it stands now too, I prefer the episodes when they're funnier and I'm not that fussed about resolutions to cliffhangers.

So lets start the war now, the Boys from the Dwarf are better than the Boys and girls in the Tardis. But Who is a nice substitute while Dwarf bounces around being on TV or not.

Much as I loved Red Dwarf in it's early days, I think the quality of the scripts deteriorated as the effects budget increased and never recovered fully.

Series' 6 & 7 tended towards formulaic self-parody and S8 was basically a sketch show!

I'm told it did a lot to help BBC Manchester back when 99% of content was produced in London, and I give it credit for the mature way it handled Charles' undeserved legal troubles — I think most programmes would have recast or otherwise burnt their bridges as soon as there was a whiff of smoke. I wouldn't want to watch it though. I remember everyone thinking it was funny when I was in primary school.

I was born in 1995, so I'm actually young enough to have grown up with New Who.

I had a good friend when I was growing up who loved it. Which was fine. Except it was my first experience of that annoying 'i can't go five minutes without quoting something' so it was a constant stream of 'smeg head' this and 'smeg head' that. It wore very thin very quickly. And we had to watch it all the time. All the time.

But it's fine when Doctor Who fans run around saying "Exterminate" "Are you my Mummy" or "Don't Blink" or something?

Both sets of fandoms have that element, don't pretend it's just a Dwarf issue

Also, the Daleks are big fans of Red Dwarf, don't forget:
