I have a Foxsat HDR box at the moment and I am able to transfer programming on to my USB so I can keep on the computer. I would however like a Freetime box and possibly the wifi model. Would I still be able to use the USB functionality with those boxes?

That's a pain, is there any other easy way of transfering programmes?

Last night my FoxSat HDR began 'stuttering' when playing recorded programs.

Today it seems OK, but I'm beginning to wonder if it's time to move onwards and upwards. Does that sound like a 'warning'?

If I were to get, eg, an HDR-1000S, would I be able to transfer my recorded programs across, USB to USB?

The stuttering could be a bad patch on the disk but hard to tell.

You can transfer across from the Foxsat to a HDR-10x0S but not the other way around.

It happened with several different recordings I tried, including some that had been there several months. However, they all seem OK today (so far).

OK, that's good. What, just with a normal USB lead?

You wont be able to watch HD recordings (unless you have the Custom Firmware and Nowsters patch installed).

Without the CF you will have to copy programmes to a usb drive (EXT3 File system required for files larger than 4GB). And then transfer the drive to a HDR1000s (not sure if the HDR1000s works with EXT3 (it supports NTFS though unlike the Foxsat).

Installing Custom Firmware makes it much simpler as you can copy recordings directly to a NTFS USB drive on the PC and then plug this into the HDR1000S.

Most (all?) of my recordings are SD, as I tend to leave loads of carp on there and have to try and save space. I'll check but, if that's the case, I can just transfer them by USB lead?

Where is the firmware and patch obtained from and onto which device is it installed (FoxSat, HDR1000 or PC)?

Pingu123456 answered your question about the CF. For SD recordings only very long films will exceed 4GB so you should be able to transfer them using a FAT32 formatted USB device. Do you need instructions how to copy files to a USB connected device on a Foxsat-hdr.

Ooh-er, that's not looking good.

The disk had become a bit more unreliable, even when pausing a live programme, and I had decided a 1010S was the way to go, and started copying programmes off via a USB stick and saving them on my PC.

I left it copying while I went out (it seemed to take nearly as long to copy as the programmes took to run) and when I came back the saved programme list was blank.

I tried rebooting but it said the HDD wasn't formatted. I declined its offer to reformat it while I hoped there was still a chance of recovering any of the recorded programmes.

But I doubt there is a chance. Any thoughts?

Assuming it's a Foxsat-hdr, best chance is try to install the Custom Firmware and run the Fix Disk package.

It is. But it won't let me do anything without first formatting the HDD, so I guess all my recorded progs are lost for ever?

You could try connecting the HDD to a PC booted into Linux and run a disk check that way.

You would need a sata drive caddy to connect the drive.

OK, thanks for your help, Graham.

I think I'll have to regard my old recording as 'lost', and hope they are repeated some time.

Very odd.

I've let it 'reformat' (which it asks to do every time I boot up, though I'm not sure it really does anything).

So I can then get live TV but no recording, rewinding or pausing.

The oddest thing is that the media list shows used disk space of 71%, just like before, though no progs are listed....

If I recall correctly, if the box offers to format the disk it only formats the individual partitions that are totally unmountable. This suggests to me that perhaps the video partition is corrupt, but can still be mounted, and it's formatted one of the others. (Though are you saying it still asks to format every time you boot it subsequently?)

So you may now find that you can follow Graham's advice and see if the fix-disk utility from the custom firmware will be able to fix the video partition. Sounds like it would be worth a try anyway.
