I would have liked to see more of the Fifth Doctor and Nyssa without Tegan. They seemed to have potential as compatible personalities but you'd never notice with Tegan always taking centre stage.

Yeah, they must have twigged as soon as the Doctor had to explain to her what a key was.

Tamm, damm it. I thought their rather frosty rivalry early in The Key to Time worked better than her later characterisation, actually. She left because she was no longer being written as the Doctor's equal, and the writers remedied that only after she was replaced by Lalla. Mary could have done well with those scripts, where Romana was his equal but also a bit flirty.

Sorry, I do keep spalling that rong.......

I do like the way Romana was introduced in The Ribos Operation and that sort of know it all attitude that put her at odds with The Doctor but on the other hand I did like the more humorous side of it later on in the Season. So for me, both sides of that dynamic worked but personally the humour wins out for me.

That's because Martha, for the most part, was never written as Ten's equal and friend. She was written almost entirely as Not!Rose, and just to add unnecessary drama to the whole Rose situation. I once saw on Tumblr a post that all of Martha's best moments happen when Ten is absent, and they're right!

Now that i think about it, with the exception of Donna and Wilf, none of Ten's companions worked well for him.

With Rose they came off as a hot young couple who were into how hot and young they were and wanted to show everyone how hot and young they were. They started to seem really smug and obnoxious about it, and I wasn't even halfway into "New Earth" before it started to get on my nerves.

I know we like to joke about Mickey being the tin dog, but honestly K9 was treated with more respect. I honestly wonder what the point of Mickey in Series 2 was at times, like it's trying to set up some sort of love triangle, but doesn't want to really commit to it. Which is really weird giving what happened in "Boom Town".

Jack, well, Jack was okay for one story. I highly doubt he would have worked as a long-term companion for Ten due to Ten's views on violence in general. Jack worked much better with Nine though since he seemed willing to tolerate those sorts of things.
