Just bought my son a new Moto G from Tesco for £89.50, spent £2 getting it unlocked, so far so good.
But just phoned Three to order a micro sim for it and they've charged me £5.11.. bloody hell!!! Vodafone sent them for free.

Have no choice though so have had to stump up for it.

Bit expensive though.

P.S. Very impressed with the Moto G though, nice piece of kit!

I think that's because you ordered it directly from Three. That price is how much they charge for replacement sims.

Yes, but it's to replace an existing sim from three. My son's existing phone is currently on Three, but has the full size sim, hence the need to order a replacement from Three.

Three charge £5 for a replacement sim normally, alternatively you may be able to get it cut down.

My son is at Uni, so I'm having to send the phone and sim off to him, so not really an option.
If I left it for to him to do, the phone would still be in it's box this time next year.

Bloody hell the sims cost Three pennies. That's some mark up to rip your customers off with.

Begs the question why you got it then.

So if you were running a mobile phone network what would you charge?

Just the charge of postage SIM cards cost companies hardly anything you can buy them in shops for a pound for Christ sake. Shocking they charge over five pounds to swap SIM card data from one to another,

I bought a moto g from carphone warehouse and realised it needed a microsim. Went to three shop with my three sim and they cut it needed with a hand machine and and gave me an adaptor as well - no charge.

Also you can order a free pay and go 3 normal sim as well from web. Just take it to a 3 shop as I did.

So what's wrong with your son's existing phone?

£2 to unlock was a good deal. I haven't been quoted less than £4.

When I went to a three store to replace my standard sim, the staff took the sim and cut it using a sim cutter and presto I had a micro sim...

It's a Galaxy Y (I think) and a bit underpowered and generally underwhelming. It's done him ok for the past two years but I promised him an upgrade so this is it.

Sethpet, what I meant was that he's not into phones that much and his inertia would just mean that one day he'd 'get around' to getting his sim sorted, which may possibly mean never

Maybe once he gets his shiny, decent new phone he'll appreciate it, and it's features more and actually phone his mum up more often.

Plenty of places on Ebay unlocking the Moto G for about £2.04.

T-Mobile charged me £10 to get a micro SIM. A rip off, but I needed a new SIM so paid it.

Didn't cost me anything with Orange. Cut my standard sim to micro using a cutter. Then when I got an iPhone 5 and needed a nano sim it was free from an EE store. O2 and Virgin have sent me free sims too.

Isn't there a way on Three to order a free PAYG sim and then CS to swap your number over? I just joined Three from O2 but I did that a few times on O2 and it was very straightforward.

When I ordered a replacement Nano SIM I had to key in the 19-digit number on the new SIM and my mobile phone number into a form on the Three website and it was swapped within 30 minutes.

I've had three replacement SIM cards due to dicking about with various phones, and then losing one.

Even the one I lost I wasn't charged for, Ii just went into the store. Are you sure the fee isn't a 'postage fee'?

£5.11 for a what is essentially a second class stamp?

No, it's definitely for the sim. Shameful rip off, but not as bad as T-Mobile aparrently.

Go to a Three shop, they'll cut it to size for free.
