Interesting figures for the 3 months ending Nov 13. Seems Android continues to increase share despite 5s/5c launch in Sep 13. According to Kantar in GB during that time Windows has doubled share in UK almost taking them direct from ios.

http://bgr.com/2014/01/10/apple-ipho...et-share-2013/

All markets seem to be reflecting similar trends and it seems for now at least the 5c has failed in its purpose to increase market share.

What's unclear from all these recent data dumps is if the market itself is increasing, or if Android is taking share from iOS or WinPhone or Blackberry.

Both iOS and Android devices are about to jointly take over from traditional PCs, if the graphs are accurate, which is the more interesting figure (this might affect a lot of IT jobs):

Android is likely to end up the most out there, but Apple is already big enough to be a huge number 2, but the others (BB/WinPho) may end up too small to count.

Now Google have, even if they wouldn't admit it, a manufacturing arm and don't seem that bothered about making mega bucks from hardware I think the next couple of years will be very very interesting. It won't be just Apple who are struggling to compete but, interestingly, other Android phone makers like Samsung and HTC.

If the charts linked from the BGR page are correct, I don't see how anyone could figure that Android could be "taking share" from WinPhone - iOS and BB definitely.

Android - slight increase (50 to 55%)
iOS - drop (35 to 30%)
BB - big drop (6% to around 2%)
WP - increase (5% to 10%)

So .... WinPhone sales increasing, iOS share actually dropping, Android share increasing. If this trend continues, BB is effectively gone, WP will be rivalling iOS in device sales, Android will be the runaway winner.

Would you rather.....

80% market share and 20% of the profits....?

20% market share and 80% of the profits...?

I thought plenty had been written by now about how market share isn't the be all and all.

Don't you get bored trawling the net for negative stories about Apple, and posting them here?

I would much rather have the first one, as you can't keep on increasing the profit and it could be the reason the market share is going down (too expensive).

I'm not sure that Apple are going to keep that position; there is a certain amount of momentum to Apple and their sales, but how long do you think they can keep going without Steve Jobs vision? He was a very single minded person, and the companies success was squarely down to him. Apple without Steve Jobs isn't a patch on what it once was (I dare say that iOS7 wouldn't have happened with Jobs around).

I am definitely intrigued to see how WP compares to Android on store profitability. There are some free/ad support/freemium games on the WP store, but the majority are paid apps (ie. like the iOS store). And while there are ways of sideloading apps on WP, its not exactly easy - unlike Android which is almost positively encouraging software piracy.

If I was a shareholder I'd go for the latter company, if I was a customer I'd go for thd former.

First one obviously. Apple's profit return maximisation is hitting the ceiling because of their decreasing market-share. Their scope for increase is constantly falling because they have less and less market-share.

Android on the other hand, has all the market-share but has yet to fully monetise this because of various other factors, but the scope and potential for profit is far far more than it is on iOS devices.

Just look at how developers are starting to flock to Android to develop apps. They are finding that they can make just as much money on Android as they can on iOS and this is becoming true across the whole Android ecosystem. I know which one I would invest in.

Jobs was obviously a very big part of Apple, but its not as though they've ton down the toilet in the last couple of years.

iOS7 may not be perfect, but the overall look is much cleaner than iOS6 and earlier, and doesn't seem to have had much of a negative impact on anything.

Apple have done nothing significant since Jobs departed, and no way is that current bean counter in charge going to do anything other than maximise profits. Which is awesome for shareholders ... but longer term vision just isn't there as it used to be - and that is what made Apple great.

So, from the consumer perspective how is Apple going to remain attractive when they've gone from being driven by a man with a very distinct vision, to being run by a bean counter? That is a fundamental shift, and whilst Sir Jonny has some good designs, he's a designer - not a product guy.

Would Jobs really have sanctioned the 5C?

It's quite difficult to make a direct comparison between iOS and Android. iOS only exists on one makers devices whereas Android covers a large range of devices from different manufacturers ranging from budget to high end.

Does any single Android maker command 30% of the market?

I fully agree that we are seeing the death throes of Blackberry and that Windows Phone is the only other serious contender now.

But Windows Phone's' only real USP is low price and should Google continue in the Moto G vein with further releases I can see WP struggling to gain any really significant market share...

Android has the bulk of the new sales and has had for a while, but people don't seem to be using them. Safari still has over 50% of the mobile browsing market share.

That could be because a lot of older iOS devices are still in use. They're pretty reliable so tend to end up given to the kids or sold on eBay when they are replaced

I;m not sure if you understood that what CP was saying was 80% of the whole world's profit from all companies, compared with 20% i.e. 4 times the amount of profit. Given the raison d'être for a company being in business is profit I really can't even see why anyone should dispute that the latter (of his choices) is preferable.

BIB - struggling is a strange word to use for a company that is one of the biggest in the world and is probably about to announce yet another record breaking quarter for sales and profit.

The iPhone has already pretty much been abandoned in Spain and now Italy. Not using them either?

Many of the features of IOS are walled Cloud and/or data heavy. Yet obviously, anyone paying up to £45 a month is going to want something for their money.
And obviously when phablets finally come out, people will use them even more.

Interesting use of bold there, negating the wording preceding it which indicated 'in the next couple of years'. Are you a lawyer?

Holy shit!!

A negative story about apple? Correct me if I'm wrong here but is Android, Blackberry and windows phone not mentioned here? Has it not been mentioned that blackberry is crashing out and windows phone is on the up?

Why the hell do you need to turn absolutely everything into an anti apple story. You seriously have something wrong with you.

Surely you would be interested enough in Apple to read the OPS post?
Italy's share halved in 3 months. Spain's was negligible anyway.

Overall Europe fell big in what is Apple's peak 3 months.

Do you just use some random mobile jargon word generator for your posts ?
