Everyone always talks about how filling and satisfying porridge is for breakfast, it'll keep you going all morning my mum used to say, I've been eating it this past couple of weeks as part of my healthy eating push and far from keeping me going all morning I'm hungry before I even get to work.

I tried Scotts oats didn't like them to be honest so moved onto Ready Brek and yes it's nice but take this morning for example, had my Ready Brek at 6.30, go to work 7.45 and my stomach was rumbling I was hungry. Now I know you can add fruit etc to it and I tried that but found it horrible. I've found my 2 slices of toast more filling than porridge.

Anyone else similar?

I have never found porridge a filling breakfast (and I am a Scot) rather just a filler until mid-morning tea or coffee and a bun, biscuit (or two/three) and then on to lunch. The very thought of adding fruit, yoghurt, honey or anything else to porridge has always made me feel ill - oats and fruit ... yuk!

The best ever breakfast is a good old English - bacon, egg, toast plus whatever you like to accompany these ingredients!

Eat more of it and add things like dried fruit and banana.

I've actually cut porridge out this year because I find it to be the opposite; it sits heavily on my stomach and makes me feel sluggish and "stodgy".

I find it quite filling, I use plain rolled oats and add my own stuff like raisins, cinnamon, and a sliced apple.

The new ads for Special K porridge caught my attention. Their claim of 30% less fat, although true, hides the fact that it has more salt and sugar and calories than other brands. But boy don't people love the 'low-fat' tag, some people will buy just about anything with that claim.

I find porridge is filling.

Perhaps it depends how much or how little milk you use to make it.

If you make it quite stodgy then it is more filling than if you make it more milky.

I've been having the Special K Berries porridge which is quite nice.

I love porridge with honey. I do find it filling but like it stodgy rather than runny.

an individual serving pack of porridge is less than 40 grams, or about 1.5 ounces, without the milk

It isn't that substantial a meal is it?

Hotel chains tend to give you a fruit juice, a cereal, and a cooked breakfast with toast (at least!)

I tried Scotts oats didn't like them to be honest so moved onto Ready Brek..
I think this is your problem - Ready Brek is very processed so your body won't take long to break it down, leaving you hungry again quite soon.
Old school rolled oats like Scotts Porage/Quaker oats will take much longer to digest and so leave you fuller, longer.
No sure what you didn't like about Scotts, but I find some brands (eg Jordans chunky) a bit 'chewy' but if you soak the oats overnight in milk they become much nicer.

I find it very filling. I can even go swimming for an hour during the morning, without running out of energy.
I make mine with fruit and plain yoghurt and water instead of milk, no added sugar or honey ,and a little bit of cinammon for flavour.

I find Scott's Porage Oats quite filling.
Just use Oats, Water & pinch of Salt to prepare in microwave.
Add a little milk after cooling down period from microwave cooking.

No fruit, honey or any other stuff.

I find porridge quite filling. I do make it more stodgy than milky though and I usually have a banana with it. Porridge, along with eggs, is the most filling breakfast there is imo. Usually in the morning I don't have time to make eggs so porridge it is. Otherwise I have an omelette for breakfast or scrambled eggs with grilled tomatoes and mushrooms.

I find whenever I eat cereal for breakfast, I'm always starving again an hour later. This is especially true with Special K so I don't bother eating cereal at all any more. It's mostly bad for you anyways.

ReadyBrek isn't porridge.

A scoop of protein powder mixed in makes it more filling.

Porridge is definitely not filling for me and it's quite common actually to hear people say they feel hungry afterwards. It's usually a sign of an intolerance. When I eat porridge, I will feel hungry almost straight away after eating it.

I would say that it's indicative of a problem with you, rather than a general issue with porridge.

I agree, I could never understand what people were talking about when they say porridge is filling. I would get hungry by around 10ish if I have porridge for breakfast, whereas with a protein breakfast that will keep me going until around 4ish

I'm not absolutely filled with a portion of porridge - I love it, but only have it plain with water - the only problem is it gives me heartburn and I never usually suffer from it. I eat a low fat diet btw.

Nope. As a rule cereals aren't filling, not even porridge oats. Doesn't matter how they're prepared. They make good between meal snacks though.

I recently spent a week in America and I was so grateful to have been able to find porridge ('oatmeal') on the menu a couple of times rather than anything involving eggs/cheese/meat (and any multiple combinations thereof).

Same for me. . A carb high breakfast means I will be Hungary about 10 - 11, a protein high breakfast can keep me going alll day.
