Perhaps Jim believes he would have been successful anyway and perhaps Lionel has been telling Jim he 'made him a star' for the last 40 years and expect him to constantly fall to his knees with gratitude. That's what i'm getting.

If you were anyone who made it through a talent show, how much gratitude would you have for one of the judges? Some. But you presumably won because you actually should've won (not that I've ever found Jim Davidson funny, but not the point).

Yes,but with ninety-plus points from all the judges it is clear that Lionel "making him a star" is a bit of a stretch. He was going to be a star no matter what Lionel did.

He did but Jim is mistaken. Lionel was indeed on the Royal Variety in 1980 when Larry Hagman forgot his words and Mary Martin (Larry's mum) appeared from he wings to help him out.

This was the reference made last week and Jim said he was on the same bill. But he wasn't Jim was on the bill in 1981.

I expect Jim thinks he was on the same bill because the 1980 show was so well documented and is replayed so frequently such to make it familiar enough for him to get the years mixed up.
