The Moonbase on DVD -to buy or not to buy -?

Okay, with the release of The Moonbase being imminent, some people are suggesting true fans should not buy The Moonbase in protest because we are not hearing anything further yet on the possible release of additional missing episodes, and possibly The Moonbase & its missing episodes might be one of these.

I'm not suggesting this, but I am starting to ponder the merit on purchasing this DVD release.

If you're like me you have purchased Lost in Time on DVD which already contains the two remaining episodes & all the commentary and sound for the two others that are missing. Add to this the fact they may have found these episodes and so a full release could be a couple of years away. Because of this, I have to ask myself, do I want to pay full price for something I've already got with the only addition to the two missing episode and any visuals replaced by animation and a few extras being added to the DVD?

I'd rather put this purchase off until at least we know the status of this "large haul" old BBC shows from the sixties ..Okay, I might never buy it then

So, if you share similar views let us know.

A true fan would buy the animation release as well as the recovered episodes one when its avaliable.

I myself have bought every release including the revisits but I always keep both of them for completeness.

Withholding your purchase as some kind of protest is pointless and won't be noticed by BBC Worldwide, nor would they care if they did notice.

However, it might be worth hanging on a little while to see what further announcements may or may not be made regarding the status of missing episodes.

No-one forces you to buy each DVD the moment it's released, so if you have any doubts it'd be sensible to hang fire until you're sure that the BBC aren't sneakily planning to re-release The Moonbase in all it's complete and restored glory. (Well not in the immediate future anyway.)

Also, unless it's a story that you're desperate to see then it's worth waiting a few months anyway, as the price usually drops significantly at many of the online retailers. Saves quite a lot of money.

I've been pondering the same thing as I'm coming to The Moonbase on my run through and like the OP I already have the two missing episodes(plus the telesnaps) on the Lost In Time DVD.

It is a tricky one but I personally will probably buy it as I like to have the official release if I can with the extras. If it is re-released at a later date I can always sell this release of and buy that one. If not, I have two copies. It's no big deal, annoying as it may seem. It's only if they did a second re-release that I would become annoyed and leave it. (Unless it involves rediscovered episodes of course)

People are thinking about not buying Moonbase as a protest?!

Good grief.

I can understand not buying it because you're wondering if the missing episodes now exist ... but going so far as to call it a protest, and saying you're withholding your twenty quid to teach the Beeb a lesson ... that's just weird.

I am happily buying Moonbase. I have bought all of the "first release" DVDs (except something called "Scream of the Shalka") and a handful of the rereleases (especially when I was able to get them cheap).

The Moonbase missing episodes may or may not return. Who knows? There's all sorts of gossip and rumours around the place, but Moonbase doesn't seem to be a front runner in the various conflicting rumours I am hearing. I have Lost In Time so have the two extant episodes. I am a proud supporter of the CD soundtracks and have Moonbase on CD so I know the story reasonably well. The animated episodes are the best way* for me to get to grips with the story properly, and fully understand what is going on.

If you are happy with the two surviving episodes and soundtrack/telesnaps, then do save your cash. You won't be getting access to the shiny new DVD extras, but you can put that money under the mattress until such a time as a more complete option becomes available ... by which time we might have got round to joining the Euro.

*until the missing episodes turn up!!

It would be foolish to not buy out of protest as this would be pointless - non-sales don't show up in statistics, do they? Classic Who DVD sales vary wildly (I believe Genesis was highest and Time and the Rani lowest, unsurprisingly) so no one would know about any kind of protest from sales figures.

However, what I would say is that with regards to the possible find it might be worth holding back until summertime when the DVD will be cheaper and any announcement probably will have come by then. It is of course possible that it's been found so it may be worth waiting a while.

I'd love to know more about those kinds of sales figures. Any ideas where any info could be found?

They would be confidential, but figures leaked in 2008 suggesting Genesis/Earthshock/The Five Doctors were the best sellers.

Of course people have been saying of late that Enemy of the World out sold Genesis, and that's certainly possible.

It's really just down to your personal preference, rather than being a question of boycotting.

My order for the moonbase dvd has been despatched from the bbc shop so no going back now. Will be nice to watch a complete version of the story rather than listening to the audio version. Also looking forward to the commentary and production text. I have a bigger beef with the dvds of enemy of the world and web of fear-no extras/commentaries at all.

Okay, I think I'm going to hold off buying The Moonbase, more because I'm a tight arse & don't really see much "must have" need for it in my collection, so as one of you suggested, can wait until either the price drops, they do find the missing episodes, or alternatively Hell freezes over, which ever comes first, (hang on, I think that last one just happened)..

Although..
I might be swayed if the animation & the extras (there's 2 DVD's aren't there??) are really good.

Sooo, for whoever is getting it in the next few days -keep me posted here please. It's released here in EnZed on 29 Jan. Ta very muchly

I will buy this release. I like to purchase the "Special Editions" or the newer and more complete editions and then give the old one to one of my friends so that I can get them hooked on Doctor Who as well.

So ... did people buy it, then?

Yes got it and good value at £11.19 and quick delivery by the bbc shop. The animation is excellent although(and I got some stick on the 2014 dvd thread for saying it) the extras are sparse but at least there are extras as the web of fear will have none. Seems an end of an era the last of the line of classic stories with commentaries and extras.

Dammit, it wasn't that price when I looked the other day!

Anyway, I paid nearly £14 for mine and as you say the animation is excellent but the extra's aren't much though the documentary that was on there was interesting enough.

Personally speaking I think at both the prices we paid for it it was overpriced for what was on there. Normally I'd hang on for the price to drop but I was coming to that story on my run through so I decided to buy it anyway.

If you haven't brought it already I would do just that-hang on and wait for the price to drop.
