After he regenerated he didn't know how to fly the Tardis and he didn't seem to know Clara either so could it be possible that he lost his memory?

Who knows? It could be just a bit of post regeneration mind fog or considering he is the first of a new set of regenerations it might be an ongoing plot point ie this doctor is all brand new and confused. We will find out sooner rather than later as filming spoilers emerge. I tend to think its a temporary thing but we shall see!

No, he just temporarily became a savant.

Yes, although there's only so long they could keep that up for as the action hinges on him being able to time travel, so if he's forgotten that, the show's pretty screwed!

I think they could weave elements of it in- that would be a nice bit of character exploration- but you can't have him screaming at the heavens asking who he is a la Eight.

I think it's mostly likely to be a temporary memory loss, but didn't Moffat say something about the new Doctor having a connection to Peter Capaldi's past characters in the Whoverse? I guess there's a chance he's Lucius Caecillus or John Frobisher's body with the doctor inside or something that actually makes sense

I didn't even take it that seriously, if Capaldi's first line is:

"Only kidding" *wink* and they're off I wouldn't be surprised (or disappointed)

That would be very anti-climactic and Moffat doesn't really do that

But Sherlock does it a lot.

Well they do end up with the Paternoster Gang in their first episode so someone must have piloted the TARDIS there (it's a little much to believe they randomly crash there out of all space and time).

I suppose it could have been Clara or the TARDIS herself but if the idea was to take the Doctor to someone who could help him get through his post regeneration madness/memory loss then the TARDIS would surely have taken him to River.

It cant a River is in the Library, as that planet is inhabited by the Vastra Navada shadow creatures and the Doctor promised them they would be left alone!
The TARDIS would know that too, so if it is the TARDIS taking them some place, then wouldnt it go to the next best place which is the Paternoster Gang?

I obviously meant a River from earlier in her timeline (between the Byzanthium and the Library for example).

Oh OK but that would muck things up in River's timeline, I thought her story from cradle to grave so to speak is done?
Just her Data ghost to use in stories now and that's also been done, as the Doctor said goodbye!

The Doctor: You know, since we're talking with mouths, not really an opportunity that comes along very often, I just want to say, you know, you have never been very reliable.
Idris: And you have?
The Doctor: You didn't always take me where I wanted to go.
Idris: No, but I always took you where you needed to go.
The Doctor: You did!

In classic who when the Doctor regenerated he sometimes suffered a bit for a short period of time, with memory loss etc.

No reason River can't meet Doc 12 and beyond.

obviously, the implication is that he has lost his memory, and may even be a plot point of the whole episode (or not), but i'd be very surprised it if didn't have it back by the end of episode 1

So if he "has" forgotten how to fly the TARDIS, it must be selective amnesia, he must have remembered many other things - or else he's just the type of bloke who turns up in a body, in front of a young woman in a weird room with rotating things above his head and staircases, and weird whirring noises and doesn't once question "where the ef am I and who are you?"

Yet he knew he was in something that was able to be flown.

If he had really lost his memory, why would he assume he was in some sort of vehicle and not in a room in a house with lots of controls.

After the first time Clara was in the Tardis they went on to the plane where the Doctor asked her did she know how to fly it as he didn't.

Symmetry perhaps?
