All those that think racism has no place in comedy please watch this DVD

Paul Chowdhry - What's Happening White People!

And ask yourself is it ok when its a minority racial group using that kind of comedy against other minority group or against the majority?

Could you rephrase the question please.

I am asking why Jim's "racist" comedy isn't accepted or shown on TV anymore yet a stand up comic whom is British born but has Punjabi heratige can say the things he says in his "comedy"?

That's the same as people having a moan/taking the p*** out of their own family but going ballistic if anyone else says something! I complain about my kids but I'd not be happy if anyone else did, it's human nature!

You cannot compare a racist rant packaged as comedy with someone laughing at themselves.

Perfect answer! Watch bbc "old Jews telling jokes" for more of the same "laugh at your own" humour.

As I said watch the particular DVD he has names for multiply races. Tries to do accents etc, which is why I am asking if that is ok?

People pay money for his DVD, they pay money to watch his X rated shows, if you don't like his comedy then it's simple don't watch it.....I wouldn't go to see someone at a theatre or watch their video if I knew there material wasn't to my taste.

Jim like any comedian performs an act, he's not alone, there are many comedians who take the mick out of people.....I watched a programme with Jimmy Carr where he took the mick out of fat people and audience members. I see comedians telling jokes about blondes and gingers, but hey that is acceptable as long as people don't think it racist.

Have you ever seen a comedian in concert? because Jim is not unique.

Why did you watch it? You obviously don't like him it doesn't make sense.

I remember when BB decided ding Sree's accent was racist but when Marcus pointed out people were doing all sorts of accents they quite rightly backed off.

Most anti racism is just a puke-a-thon of sycophants these days.

You assume I don't like him, I only asked if it was ok.

I was making a point one that was picked up upon, we have geographical based comedy that pokes fun out of people from areas/towns/countries being English and telling a joke about the Welsh or telling a joke about a girl from Essex, or saying a joke about people from the Liverpool area... Where is the line drawn? How many offended people merit a ban on said form of comedy? Am I allowed as a British born white descent male able to take offence on behalf of a Welshman that a Scotsman is telling a joke about?

Jim was really becoming well-known 30 years ago, it was a different time then I'd say. Things have come a long way with regard to race in the last 30 years, for the better.

I never liked him because I didn't think he was funny.

Race wasn't his only thing though was it, he makes jokes about disabled people, gay people and it seems he had complaints in 2007 due to jokes about rape victims.

Some things just aren't funny.

It's not always the subject matter either, but the way you tell them or what you're saying in your jokes I would say.

I remember the comedy from the 1970s and 1980s and how it changed

Mother in law jokes and racist jokes used to bore me in the 1970s. It was all about putting people down who are different to you. His chalky accent made me giggle but not the insinuation that black people were stupid.

There is a fine line between showing people's funny regional/sexual/age related quirks and outright put downs.

Some things you find funny someone else may not, there are comics around today that make jokes about all you have listed, they still draw in massive crowds, so I don't believe we have come as far as you may think. Most comedy pokes at something, and if we rule out race as a subject to joke about, then we should rule out every subject matter that may offend someone.

Lots of countries have had slave population. At its peak Rome had almost 1/4 of the population as slaves. And what on earth is reverse racism? Its just racism... And racism is putting down a race by generalising them whilst trying to gain racial superiority.

It was brilliant - I worked at the Beeb at the time and people used to watch it write down how many times he said something they did not like and write in - there is a switch

We are too PC correct now - comedy is about pushing boundaries - the Last Leg laughs at disabilities and is brilliant - you need to keep it in perspective.

Watched an episode of that the other night on TV. I'd forgotten how good it was.

In Sickness and in Health was good too.

It was all light hearted and most did not bat an eyelid. I've been to many Kevin Wilson shows as well. Now there's a chap that would make your hair curl if you had sensitive ears.

He tells you from the off if you are easily offended you'd best leave. But I've met Kevin personally many times and he is one of the nicest, kindest chaps I've met.

Richard Pryor is another comedian that can be near the knuckle.

If you don't like their material, don't go and watch the shows, that's my advice.

Oh how I yearn for the days when people (and comedians) did not have to consult a lawyer before opening their mouths

Couldn't have put it better myself! There are many things on tv and in films, concerts etc. that I don't like and I have a really effective solution - I don't watch/go to see them. Very simple really
