Why is this a topic in this forum?

I imagine it's because of the type of humour/comedy associated with Jim.

Could be wrong of course.

They didn't back off in the least, they just stayed polite while he blustered and shouted.

Of course a white person taking the piss out of an Indian accent is more offensive than a southerner doing a manchester accent. Indian people had decades of ruthless exploitation and unashamed racism to fuel their anger. People from Manchester have no reason to suppose that people from Essex see them as their biological inferiors, have they?

I don't understand the OP. He asks us to watch a DVD, then says that Jim is not shown on tv. Was the DVD we are being asked to watch shown on tv? If not, what is the point? All sorts of stuff is available on DVD that is not shown on tv.

Jim himself said he stopped doing Chalky White material because it was nothing like black british people today. He would no more expect it to be shown on tv than we expect to see the new year in with Andy Stewart and the White Heather Club. Times change. If Jim has some good modern material, he will have every opportunity to come back; but has he?

Oh wow, full credit where it's due there to the channel Good to know it was shown in full. I should retract my statement about them cutting such things these days now hehe.

I thought so. I found it odd that the thread starter didn't attempt to make a more overt connection, though. Thanks.

I made this topic to debate peoples thoughts on racism in comedy as one of the housemates Jim Davidson is a "racist" comic.

I believe its a legitamte thread, and one that discusses an important point, both that's been brought up on the shows and in the press whilst being in the show.

It also draws into the discussion freedom of speech and personal views.

Linda called Jim the C word. Some find the word really offensive.

Nappy called Luisa dirty because she said she slept with a number of men in one night.

Where does it stop?

I think it was Ch.5 who showed it iirc. I know I digressed from the topic of this thread about the Dam Busters film, but thought it relevant enough to mention.

Wasn't the idea with Alf Garnett, increasingly over time as society changed for the better, that he was always in the wrong with his bigoted ideas and he always came off worse because of them? Of course you'll always get thickos who take it at face value and agree with the character and laugh with him rather than at him. A bit like all those Americans who thought Born In The USA was a patriotic anthem.

Maybe the Paul Chowdhry question is similar to the question of why it's not ok for white people to say the N word but it is ok for black people, having reclaimed it from the slavery days. Dunno. Things are getting complex (or another word might be sophisticated) nowadays, because we're gingerly inching our way back from PC, which can be a bit worthy and joyless. So you've got the "ironic" bigotry of Ricky Gervais, Jimmy Carr, etc. It seems to be alright to laugh at the Chinese accent again lately for some reason. It doesn't sound very ironic to me, but opinions vary on the matter. Personally I reckon it's dodgy. Ha ha those different people with their hysterical different way of talking.

The idea with this ironic bigotry is that anyone reasonable with a brain knows what's a fair attitude and what isn't in these enlightened times ( ! ), so we can relax a bit and just laugh if something's funny. Personally I find some sexist jokes are funny, for one thing because you can often turn them on either sex. Most racist jokes I come across, maybe texted around, aren't funny to me, not because they're racist but because they're made up by stupid people. They rely on a dumb, inaccurate pretext, whereas jokes are usually about the surprise revelation of a truth. There are race jokes that aren't racist, and they're much more satisfying. What do you call a black man flying a plane? A pilot you racist cünt. That's bloody clever that, because it makes the audience try to think up a racist punchline and then chastises them for it. (It does need the big expletive on the end, switching one unmentionable for another.)

Personally I think Louis CK is very funny and interesting on these matters. Put "louis ck n word" into YouTube and read on.

Is Jimmy Carr the modern-day 'acceptable' version Jim Davidson?

I originally made this thread not to condemn or celebrate Jim Davidson's form of comedy but to start a debate on what is acceptable today, I used the artists DVD as an example, some may not have access to it, but this YouTube video has many of the same "jokes" in it. I'll leave you to discus your thoughts.

I was a 70's child and a 80s teenager,I don't consider my self racist/homophobic/sexist at all compared to the generation that came before me.
The younger generations that are 10 - 20 years younger than would possibly see me as more racist/homophobic/sexist than they are though.
I think this is because the definition of these things has changed in the same ridiculous way that smacking an out of control child is now seen as a genuine crime.
I hope that makes sense.

No it's awful IMO. I am in my sixties. Picking on minority oppressed groups, violence towards a child? Animals are better protected!

Joking about race and differences is not racism/homophobia in my opinion.Coming from east London,I have a diverse group of friends who are exactly the same way. It's called "banter".
Smacking your own children occasionally,if they are completely out of hand,is not violence in my opinion.
I am sure I am not the only person of my generation who feels this way,I'm also don't spend my time looking to be offended on behalf of others either.
