Always Freebird. The solo alone makes it worth listening to

I can't say I've heard everything they did, but Sweet Home Alabama for me as well.

Slightly off topic, but the film of the same name was enjoyable too.

I'm not really a LS fan, but if any of you are interested the remaining (?) member of LS is going to be playing in South London sometime next month - a couple of mates of mine will be playing with him - funny enough we were talking about it last night - they were meant to be playing with him tomorrow and rehearsing last night but one of them happened to look on his website and saw that he was in Finland or somewhere! They called the promoter and he told them it had been moved - as soon as I have a new date and venue I will post it on here.

Who's this then Spiv? I doubt I'd be lucky enough to see Rossington live again....last time he was phenomenal and that Free Bird solo is totally my all time favourite.

My memory is probably playing tricks on me but if that's the one I'm thinking of it was recorded at a festival, though I have no idea which one,and was shown on tv late at night, possibly BBC2. I did have a video copy and an audio tape recording copied from the video, but this was many years ago obviously and both have long since been lost/destroyed.

I think LS are a great band - they took there name as a bastardisation of the Gym teacher - a Leonard Skinner allegedly.

I had the privilege of meeting Ronnie Van Zant, Ed King and Ansell Collins in the 1970's on their first UK tour at the Kursaal in Southend. They were absolute Gents and spent about 20 minutes chatting to some rather scruffy wide eyed Essex lads.

But I must say I hate Freebird - it just drones on and on and the becomes an excuse for some (IMO) not very good soloing. I recall seeing it on OGWT and everybody raving about it the next day and (like I suspect I am going to be after this post) being on my own wondering what the fuss was about.

They did other stuff that was so much better. My favourites are other tracks from the 1st album particularly Gimme Three Steps and I Aint The One. Sweet Home Alabama is brilliant great riff, The Ballad Of Curtis Lowe, Swamp Music and The Needle And The Spoon are so much better.

(Now covers himself in asbestos for the expected flaming!!)

I'm really glad you said that UB, your thoughts about freebird echo just what i think.. I didn't have the guts to say it though.. (until you did ) I haven't listened to it very much but the guitar solo just seems to hang around the same part of the neck playing the same licks over & over..

Thanks, Spiv, I'll check back here again next week. I saw your post lower down and have to say it's not like you to hold back with an opinion. I'm not a musician so I value your critique but I still love it anyway. I'm not sure when LS were last in this country but I saw them maybe 15 years ago at the then Town and County in Kentish Town..great little venue...it's now the Forum, I think.

I bought the first album in the US in 1980, great band.

Fav Skynyrd track is "What's Your Name" it just about sums up life on the road.

Others include

Gimme three steps
Saturday Night Special
Whiskey-rock-a-roller
and Sweet Home Alabama

Freebird, although brilliant now tends to get right up my nose simply because it's the only song they're remembered for.

I last saw them at Knebworth in 1976, having previously seen them on al least half-a-dozen occasions. Even sharing a bottle of (my) JD with Ronnie van Zandt in Cleethorpes Wintergardens.
