Ah, a film, that's a different matter. For some reason, on most tablets and phones will play films quietly. I think it's probably to do with the way they were encoded as I get this problem on all my devices with certain films. It's strange because music and YouTube etc are very loud.
I got an X Mini but: a) It wasn't that loud either; an b) it was poorly made with and iffy captive audio lead. If you are going to go the external speaker route then I suggest a Bluetooth capable model (I ended up with a Creative D100) as the audio output level on Bluetooth is full line level and not apparently subject to the same artificial volume restriction.

I second the bluetooth-connected speaker. If you can still get it, the Technika Barcelona is ideal.
Sound seems fine on ours. However those child hudl headphones are really poor. They are limited to protect kids ears but you can't really hear much at all through them and our kids won't use them.
