6.24pm: Luisa is rinsing off a chicken, ready to roast it. Mmmm, Sunday dinner

Didn't Science get slated for washing his chicken?

It's ok if you don't splash the water everywhere. It's still a pointless task imo

Yep, cooking it kills the bacteria but as you say Cherry, splashing water will put any bacteria all over everything by the water.

I think it's a cultural thing.

I hail from the Caribbean where washing meat is a normal thing to do.

With chicken, we use lemon juice or vinegar in the water too and I'm not entirely sure why?

Makes it less slimy though so easier to pluck off the last of the feathers or you can burn them off on a gas flame.

Luisa isn't from the Caribbean though....

Science was very particular when it came to food, meat in particular,I seem to remember the meticulous way he thoroughly kept washing mince beef for some reason!

That's why I said 'cultural' because she's Jewish and maybe they have similar customs

Maybe...but there's more risk for food poisoning from washing meat than not washing it.

I'd have thought she'd know that, being in the food trade.

Wonder if Jim will get any dinner if she is cooking.

Don't worry, Lee usually wipes the counters down with his jeans.

I don't see how because whether you wash it or you don't the most important thing is to cook chicken thoroughly.

I've always washed mine and never had food poisoning in my life.

No they don't - I think you mean Orthodox Jews.

Its not the chicken itself that can cause problems, its the water droplets when washing that can spread any bacteria by landing on worktops and cloths etc.

I don't. My best friend is a liberal Jew and her family only eat kosher meat.

Well I don't eat the worktops or the cloths so that's cool

Joking aside - I use disposable kitchen towel to pat it dry and wash my hands thoroughly before and after handling it and my worktops get cleaned several times a day with antibacterial spray or wipes.

Sounds excessive but not when you live with 2 men who leave a trail of bloody toast/cereal crumbs in their wake whenever they're in the kitchen

Purpose of rinsing a chicken is to help you inspect the flesh for disease, look for green discoloration between it's joints before cooking...the chicken to the table, has had a hard journey.

Ah, well maybe you should have substituted 'Jewish people' with 'my best friend and her family' then.

Millions of Jewish people eat bacon sarnies and I wouldn't define anyone who eats Kosher only as liberal because that's a very observant practice.

I am ashamed to say, I was the person responsible, back in the day, of starting that whole thread in the Channel 4/ big brother forum about Science washing chicken. It went on forever so I feel slightly embarrassed that the subject has reared it's head again! It's not a Jewish custom, it's more a personal/ hygiene issue with regards to bacteria. I still stand by my original point made all those years ago, only cooking thoroughly rids chicken of harmful bacteria and washing it only spreads those nasty little germs when splashing in the sink whilst washing. Anyway ... Whatever the point of view, Luisa would argue the toss!

At least they make their own toast....

Mine uses a spare mug just to put a used tea bag in rather than move 4 ft to the bin!

It was that thread that popped into my head when I saw the tweet that prompted me to start this one.
