When do dogs get their winter coats and does it depend on temperature? We got our 2 dogs last March and one of them was really really thin on fur on her stomach, to be honest bald is a better description!! Her thighs are quite sparse too but thats quite normal for greyhounds.

I noticed a week or so ago that she's growing fur on stomach could this be a winter coat or maybe the baldness was stress related due to being rehomed a fair few times.

Any ideas?

I presume they are lurchers? They are really sensitive to temperature, so heating on in the house can delay it, plus it's not that cold, my boys got a fluffy bum but nothing else!

It could be re growth if she's not stressed anymore, was she bald through dietary issues or was she fur pulling?

Greyhounds. No idea why she is bald, I I know they are not the furriest dogs in the world but I have never seen such a bald dog!! When stroking her my hand kind of gets stuck on her skin

Pretty sure it's not through pulling. Would be nice to think its cause she has settled in, time will tell I suppose. Its weird fluffy fur after all that sleek glossiness!!

Greyhounds are an extremely thin coated breed all around, and can be quite sparse underneath in the fur department at the best of times, however if she'd had actual baldness since last march, it certainly should have had re growth by now. Dog hair grows continuously in a cycle, getting shed when it reaches a certain length, a greyhound has such short hair that cycle would be very quick usually. If she was in rescue or had a few homes the most likely cause ( provided parasites have been rule out) would be stress, and perhaps it has taken a while for her to recover enough for it to grow back. Something else it could be is her food or something in it that she is reacting against, so maybe a visit to the vet for an allergy test, for instance many dogs can't do with corn or wheat, so if that's in their food it would cause problems. I highly doubt she's pulling or scratching it, greyhounds have sensitive, fine skin so you'd almost certainly be able to see marks or red blotches on her. If she's a rescue dog, it could also be that she had some complaint her previous owner never sorted so it got worse and is now beyond repair fully, or she has been kept somewhere that has affected her skin.

It seems strange that its now started to grow. I will keep my eye on it and see how it goes, she may have a thick fluffy underbelly come spring
