Well done to Matt and Doctor Who.

I only watch from time to time because I have found some of it rather baffling, but I can't fault Matt's performance in the role when I have seen it, so very well deserved.

No win for Doctor Who last night, beaten by Downton Abbey for the second year running.

Also, the second year running that Peter Capaldi didn't make the short list for Drama Performance - Matt and David made the shortlist each year (David won every time, and Matt did well too).

I must say, it was a brilliant final season for Downton so I can't say I'm surprised.

If Capaldi doesn't get any kind of recognition somewhere for his efforts in Series 9 then there's something seriously wrong in the world

With the shift in the audience and tone of writing, I'm expecting a BAFTA nod for Peter this year and perhaps one for the show too.

I'm not saying that's a good thing - for me, the show was at its best when it was also at its most popular.

But I think it will be nominated and it will be well deserved too.

I know. I wouldn't say Capaldi is the best Doctor (though he's very high up for me and definitely the best in years) but of all the people who have played him I think he's by far the greatest actor.

Still in the top four though, eh.

Did they really invent a category just so Aiden Turner could win for taking his top off? Topless scything is the way forward.

I find the NTA's rather tiresome. If anything they just seem like a massive plug for ITV and they're far too easy to fix by multiple voting and certain trashy ITV shows literally begging for votes and then acting all surprised when they win year after year.

And only three entries for International show? There are simply loads of groundbreaking, lavish US TV shows, most of which wipe the floor with shows produced this side of the pond and yet the Great British public could only choose from three shows?!

Nope sorry. It's the Bafta's all the way for me! (although I reserve the right to dismiss that as elitest nonsense if Doctor Who doesn't get a shout out there).

I don't think Doctor Who expected to win anyway as Moffat seemed to be the only person there, but who on Earth chose that clip to represent series 9? There were so many outstanding moments that they could have shown, the Doctors conversation with Davros, that speech for the Zygon Inversion, Clara's demise in Fear the Raven, the montage from Heaven Sent but they chose some massively irrelevant scene from the Woman Who Lived instead. Bizarre choice....

I guess if Peter Capaldi wore a Zac Effron face mask the votes for him would have come flooding in.

I now feel slightly better having looked at the results a bit more. Gogglebox wins best factual entertainment? Please, not a slight on the show at all, but it cannot realistically be called factual in any way - it is literally watching people share their opinions on what's been on TV!

When I also learned that you can vote as many times as you like as well, I kind of realised that it wasn't to be taken too seriously. I love Doctor Who to pieces but I've better things to do that sit there filling out voting forms over and over again.

A BAFTA-nod would do me fine personally, a win would be extremely unlikely but I'd be over the moon if Capaldi got one!

The NTA's are just fluff anyway. The BAFTA's are where the real punches are as they're recognised worldwide.

Thanks Mulett you've saved me sitting through all the other boring categories

It's important to remember that the National Television Awards ceremony is purely a popularity contest.

I'm not saying quality doesn't come into it all, but it is a temperature check on what's hitting the mark with viewers generally and what isn't.

And I don't think there's anything wrong with events like the NTAs as a balance to the panel-decided awards like the BAFTAs.

For me, the big problem isn't that Doctor Who isn't winning most popular drama anymore, its that the actor playing the Doctor isn't even making the shortlist for Most Popular Actor/Drama Performance. Especially when you consider that the shortlisting is done by the public too.

Christopher won for the one year he played the Doctor. David won all four years he was the Doctor, and Matt made the shortlist all four years and won twice.

Is it pertinent to point out that since taking over as the Doctor, Peter has never made the NTA shortlist and the show has lost almost 1.5m viewers?

Miss Talalay apprently doesn't think much of the awards either, NTA or BAFTA:

Yeah, Jenna sticking her boobs out for no apparent reason may have gained more votes!

I don't think much of Miss Talalay after reading that article, she comes across as just another Moffat fanboy! Does she really think the drivel of the last two episodes of Series 9 should be award winning stuff? She's seriously deluded.

Indeed it is. I was so pleased when he got the role. I was so pleased when Moffat became Showrunner. But in both cases I have been disappointed more than I could ever have imagined was possible. But to be fair to PC, he hasn't been helped by the weakness of the scripts during his tenure.

NTA's are fandom awards. Tennant won because he played the role on and off screen almost like a rock star and this fed the enthusiasm of femalekind, whom I would hazard a guess, are far more inclined vote on these things than men. Wasn't there a "I want to have David Tennants babies" thread at one stage? I do recall his acceptance speeches were pretty good value for money.

with the stellar stuff PC delivered, utterly insulting with the Masie Williams clip for DW. Moffat looked pissed, Dont blame him.

Why would he be "pissed" that they showed a clip from a programme he produced?

Because it isn't a clip they should have shown.

Imagine you are a footballer and you score a 30 yard volley, but instead as your one highlight they show you score a 5 yard tap in. You'd be mad
