Have you ever been to a Taybarns?
Went to a Taybarns last Sunday. I can honestly say I've never in my life had such a depressing eating experience. Considering it cost us £9 each we were pretty disgusted. I've been to pubs and had two meals for a tenner which has been a lot nicer than this rubbish.
The place was full of morbidly obese chavy families with uncontrollable kids running about the place happy to shovel as much crap down their necks as physically possible. The food was dried and shriveled up. The garlic dough balls were as hard as rocks. The roast potatoes were chewy like they'd been reheated and the chicken curry was more like an onion curry because it didn't seem to have any chicken in it. The counter around the deserts area was swimming with custard and chocolate sauce where people had been slopping it about and never bothered to clean it up and the place was generally scruffy and dirty. Is was like a human pig trough. I'd never go there again. I know it's all you can eat but when you're paying £9 each you at least expect it to be edible. I wouldn't feed half that stuff to a dog. A guy came over and asked if everything was OK so we told him about the rock hard garlic dough balls and rubbery roasties and the dried up food but he just said, 'I'll go and have a word with the chef' and then nothing was ever done about it. Why bother asking if you're not prepared to sort it out? |

I've never been but it sounds exactly what I would expect from a low-cost all-you-can-eat chain restaurant.

Any food outlet with 'barn' in its name is going to be full of downmarket fat people shovelling cheap food in like there's no tomorrow.

It does cost a bit more, but Cosmo operate a similar principle and the food is pretty good. Bit cafeteria like and not the place for a romantic meal but it does the job.

Last time I went to Cosmo 2 guys got removed by security for getting into a fight over the last spring roll... A proper fight, as in punching each other, because 1 of the 150 dishes was about to run out. It was madness and for £15.99 (plus extortionate prices for drinks) each the food was average.

I haven't yet been to Taybarns but my friends go occationally and have enjoyed it and I do plan to go along one time if just to try it out.
I've been to Kingdom (Newcastle) a few times and that is nice. The food is what you expect - takeaway/carvery quality. The place is clean and there are plenty of staff hovering to clean tables etc. I do think it depends on where you live to the quality of chain restaurants can be. |

Sounds horrific, to be honest £9 isn't a lot for food, if I was getting all you can eat for £9 I'd expect it to be terrible.
I really dislike all you can eat anyway, the ones where it's all laid out and you help yourself anyway. There are a couple of Chinese places near me that are £14 but you order from the menu and everything is cooked fresh, you just keep ordering whatever you want. They're decent enough, OK to go to with the lads from work for something to eat and a few drinks as they're better than the likes of Wetherspoons and Frankie and Bennys. |

I went to one once for a massive binge fest and it totally did the trick. I wouldn't go if I were wanting what I would normally associate with a meal out though. The food was fine, hot and fresh - it was being eaten so quickly that the food that was out was being replaced with just-cooked frequently. It was better than quite a lot of carveries I've been to because of the frequency of new food being brought out, so there were no soggy veg or other problems you sometimes encounter at mismanaged carveries were the 'troughs' are not checked and replaced often enough. There was nothing special on the menu but the place was clean and the staff were friendly.
The other customers were not overly boisterous or rowdy and there wasn't a particularly disproportionate amount of obese people compared with the general population. I sat in a corner with my friend and there was plenty of space around the table, not crammed in with even a whisper being overhead by your fellow diners; it was both open and slightly private too. I left with a giant food baby, I'd say at least twins, maybe triplets. Perhaps I was just lucky the day I went? |

No I haven't, but that's because I know just how shit it really is. Assuming you went to the Talke one, there's a good reason it's located where it is. Cheap nasty food for cheap nasty people.

No I haven't, but I just googled the menu and I can honestly say that ,other than salad, there's really nothing I would want to eat on there.I'm far from being a foodie but everything on there just seems really boring.
I admit to being a vegetarian/occassional fish eater, but that's no excuse. I can usually pick something reasonable from the harvester or pub menu, even the wimpy has a better selection than that. As I said, just really bland and boring. |

There's an all you can eat Chinese opposite Lime Street Station in Liverpool that only charge £6 at lunchtime and evenings is about £9 but you get more choice and it's absolutely delicious. We make a bee line for it whenever we go to Liverpool.
