Why the lack of special features on latest classic DVDs?

Have just seen the details of the Web of Fear DVD http://www.doctorwhonews.net/2014/01...114172008.html and it's just as vanilla as the Enemy of the World release. What is going on? No audio commentaries, nothing!

The lack of features are not even reflected in the price! Really disappointing

IIRC the extras take ages to put together, and these releases were somewhat rushed due to the discovery, hence no time to make them.

Also, I believe I'm right in saying that the team behind the Enemy/Web DVDs are not the same guys who usually make such fantastic Classic Who packages.

It's because Dan hall and pupltd who normally produce the DVDs animations and extras have stopped working on the dvd range. Their only remaining commision is underwater menace. Bbcww have taken everything in-house.

Same could be said for recent releases such as the 50th and The Time of The Doctor. Yes there are a couple of extras, which are full of Americans. Not my favorite type of people anyway.
That aside though, where are the commentaries and the video diaries. I would have loved to hear Matt Smith and David Tennant comment through the 50th. I bet it would be fascinating to hear.
Only consolation I suppose was the cheap price.

Hmm. This to me is an important point if what you are saying above is correct. Think about it in terms of any other episodes found & how they might be released. I mean obviously it would be great if other episodes are found and subsequently released but this would indicate to me there is every chance they would be released like WoF & EotW -i.e. no extras whatsoever.

Or put another way, was the reason that these two releases had no extras due to the timing of the anniversary and the rush to get them out to tie in with this, or was it in part or solely due to the point the team that normally produce the range have now stopped work on it?

what do others think?

I absolutely LOVE to hear the commentaries on the DVD's. I shan't bother getting the 50th Special then....would've been great to have the three Doctors chatting through it.
I'll just keep on my PVR!!

The 50th BluRay has some picture issues in 2D playback due to it being taken off of the left eye of the 3D version on the disk!
Lots of black bars on the left side of the image now and again at varying thickness! HD 16:9 content isnt supposed to do that if the entire content is filmed in HD with no letterboxing or pillerboxing.

Further to what has already been posted, I also think it's because when they were preparing these for DVD, they wanted as few people as possible to know about it, to reduce the risk of the news being leaked. Hence why they are *very* vanilla.

The DVD's of missing and recovered episodes will always sell like hotcakes so they probably thinking why waste any of that dosh on extras now.

The extras on Time of The Doctor are disapointing. In particular one of them is full of nerdy Americans with fixed "Cheshire Cat" grins talking about Dr Who as if it was American ! Just awfull.
To be honest I'm not that bothered about extras, most are actually quite dull and repetative although the commentries by Davison and co can be very funny.

I never realised until seeing the 5ish Doctors & looking at the extras on The Visitation (SE) quite how funny (& brilliant) Peter Davison is. I guess this is because his Doctor was pretty straight laced & played by the book. Like a lot of things of this era I blame it on JNT and definitely not PD. With another producer at the helm & a bit more free licence to ad lib & ham it up a bit, his Doctor might have quite different & a bit more like the real Peter Davison. I'm not sure if this would have worked, but there you go.

It must have been quite fun back stage on set with him & his companions. Seeing them looking back they all seem to get on pretty well. Although not sure on that one with Matthew Waterhouse..

In hindsight, I think maybe I should have started a thread soon after the release of the 5ish Doctors "new found respect for Peter Davison & The 5th Doctor".

The 5ish Doctors rebooted shouldve been on the Day of the Doctor as extras, or on Time of the Doctor as extras if there wasnt time for it to be on the 50th!
Also they shouldve put Day of the Doctor on the Time of the Doctor boxset, to complete the Matt Smith specials, even if they had done it as 2D only on there and said you have to get it separate for the 3D version of Day of.

There will probably be a 50th special edition sometime in 2014 including the fiveish doctors reboot.

They always release the vanillas then complete season boxsets so expecting day and time to be repackaged with some of the 50th stuff and new features sometime before season 8 goes to air.

They obviously got on well with Matthew as they spent ages convincing him to come back and work on some Big Finish stories with them.

Really? I have watched the BluRay (only have 2D) and not noticed an issue. Can you post a time index where this occurs please so I can check?

I did watch it yesterday but forgot to check If I have time I will check it today.

I know one is near the end of the opening shot along the wall going into Coal Hill School, another is on some shots in the time volts when the war council are discussing the moment is gone, I think another is when all three Doctors are being caught by Queen Elizabeth I's troops (again in some shots and not others).

There are one or two other places Im sure, but like I said I will have to have another look to see them all.

Im not talking about the opening titles, or Chris Eccleston's scene though, as they have thin black bars each side, due to being upscaled from SD! There are no other upscaled bits though so it wouldnt be from that!

Yeah I agree they wouldn't wind him up as much as they do if they didn't like him.

is there a chance for special editions? Although they would have to get in quick to make sure there are as many people left to talk as possible.

That would be about 2 years down the line at the very earliest and that's if they decide to do special editions. Dan hall mentioned in a recent podcast enough time has to pass so that web and enemy are no longer new on the market. Which he mentioned would be about 18 months down the line before they would feel enough time has passed for bbcww would consider the possibility. Including production time for extras and animation for web 3 DVDs of those 2 would be 2 years away at least. He says that its very possible that they might but it wouldn't be down to him.

Thanks for the insightful replies. I hope Web & Enemy do get a special edition release in the near future, I enjoy Frazer Hines' commentaries (his humour is Tim Vine-ish).

Yeah true & it's not as though people who worked on these shows from the 60's like Frazer are going to be around for ever!

Dare I say it, but it would be a damn shame if they do decide to release SE's of these two with extras in 2 or 3 years time, and there's no one around from then to do the commentary

Well that's the most ignorant thing I've read today.
