I'm sure EE still gets a good deal of brand loyalty so to speak from people who joined that deal and have stayed with them ever since.
Of course every students everyday 50 plan wasn't complete without that essential accessory the Nokia 5110 or often for girls the little 8210”

Ah, actually the NK402 - the 5110 was the 900Mhz version, so no good for Orange.
One2One had their own version with a random model number, but it must have been essentially the same as the 402, being 1800Mhz.

O2 has always been best for coverage here, followed by EE then 3. Up until 4 months ago we've never had any Vodafone coverage. When CTIL upgraded the O2 mast to 4G they added Vodafone, so they got coverage here for the first time and did 2G, 3G and 4G all at the same time. The only one without 4G here now is 3, their website says they have upgraded the mast but there's a fault.

All 4 networks come from the same mast a few miles away so VO2 have the best indoor coverage, except for one corner of the village that the main mast doesn't cover. That only has EE 2G from an old Orange mast.

Norfolk's a pretty big area though, you need to be a bit more specific.

I've had O2 4G in various places such as Hopton, Yarmouth and Lowestoft. Granted those are built up areas but it's there. Saying that in some of those areas it does go down to 2g/3g and it can be pretty shit.

I think that's the point my friend (in Diss) is making. Norwich has good service on all networks, but when you leave Norwich there are hotspots of okay on O2/Voda but in between its pretty awful. Vodafone's GPRS doesn't actually manage to transfer data so even WhatsApp / iMessage etc fail.

5146 was the One2One version.

Norfolk does seem to be an area that was forgotten by Vodafone and O2 for anything but 2G and so there's a lot of catching up to do. Even Orange to a degree, which benefitted from joining with T-Mobile/Three's MBNL network sharing to fill a lot of gaps.

In the not too distant past O2 in Cromer was barely receivable outdoors as it relied on coverage from the West Runton TV relay.

I've found the combined Orange/T-Mobile networks has helped in continuous 2G coverage along the A149 coast road particularly at Cley and Salthouse where O2/Voda fail.

A couple of weekends ago I found my work phone (iPhone 6) on Vodafone had strong signal on 4G in his front room. This means either VO2/CTIL have installed a new mast, or there has been a big refresh on a nearby 2G only mast and the new antennas have made a dramatic difference. Good 3G HD voice calls and 4G data indoors. He may switch from EE when contract is up.”

Perhaps EE will realize one day there are still coverage gaps (even with 4G1800 at high power and 4G800 launched), meaning that they will have to re-commission some of the decommissioned masts? Is that possible?

Someone on here should be able to explain...

But that area, particularly the outskirts of Cromer, is still poor on 3G when I last checked!

I hope that 3G improves as well, when 4G is launched... yes 2G is something, but when trying to stream media, 2G fails in every aspect!

Just an update that I can confirm that the Higham Ferrers mast for Vodafone has now been CTIL'd

They've put new panels up, and that according to the coverage checkers, 3G900 has been added to both O2 and Voda, in addition to the 2100 that Vod/O2 already had.

4G800 has been launched for Vodafone, according to the coverage checker, but no 4G800 for O2 yet - maybe this will either be added sooner or later, or the O2 mast (which is shared with MBNL) will get an upgrade for O2 4G800/1800?

It's nice to see some big masts starting to surface on the Vodafone predicted coverage Map now instead of just mainly smaller ones.
The big Redhill Mast just outside Telford on the A5 looks to be going live soon, I expected as much as there's lots of BT & virgin work in the area, much like there was before EE & three went 4g from the same mast.
Presently on Vodafone it's only 2100mhz 3g and in old weird Vodafone style it must only have panels facing the town or be powered by the same output as a kids walkie talkie as you can be a mile down the road in full view and loose 3g.
The predicted coverage footprint for 4g is massive albeit at low power so 3g 900mhz will go a long long way,
I guess they feel they can get away with it now as they apart from Shifnal where Vodafone only have 2g all the other areas have some 4g or 3g now, in between that is a lot of cows and sheep, none of which are heavy data users

And that was just a quick look; they're working at pace!”

Where did you get your info from? Broadway upgrade is a few miles from Broadway. Micketon upgrade is further away in Welford upon Avon and the Pershore one again is right out of the town.

But yes they are working at a pace and for once in my area!

The O2/EE mast at Wansford has new panels by the looks of things and 4G coverage for the area now on Vodafones website. Hopefully EE can now upgrade their panels to add 3G/4G to the existing 2G only ones.

Future 4G/3G/2G coverage planned on the O2 mast on Steadfold Lane, Tinwell.

So I take it the fibre is being delivered overhead in those poles?

I remember on another forum being laughed at (by that qsdqg fella that used to post on here) when I suggested it is fairly common for Openreach to use overhead fibre to serve mobile masts. But you do see it every now and again, I can think of 4 masts within about 8 miles away from here that have some degree of overhead fibre in their backhaul feed and I'm in an urban area.

That looks like a standard analogue phone line. Probably going to that bunker (probably water treatment) site below the mast, where there is the TV type antenna.

The mast has a microwave dish.

Must have been after the Google Maps image was taken then, because when Google took that image for the Maps, that mast was micro backhaul and not fiber!

Brilliant, in which case, looks like O2/Vod are going to have 4G via CTIL, and EE will soon have 4G and 3G! Hopefully that'll boost the 3G coverage in that area, because 3G is quite poor there.

Doubt it'll be MBNL'ed as Three have a 3G mast already in that area, but who knows? So long as there's 3G from all operators, that's all that matters

The mast is not upgraded yet but will be this coming week

The fibre comes from the dslam next to this cab https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.66...7i13312!8i6656 the google images are old so do not show the dslam cab

Then the cable is run right next to this green electrical cab https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.66...7i13312!8i6656 then around the edge of the field to the o2 mast,

When this next mast is there it will have voda 2g/3g/4g via fiber and o2 3g/4g via fiber but the o2 2g will be run separate via 18ghz microwave link
