I have seen this many times as I check the map every single day.”

Now that would be good - although they'd have to dig that trench to give 4G from the one down my lane. Unless of course they microwaved it to the bigger mast near Marbury that the planned coverage suggests is also going to be upgraded. Having said that, I don't think that one has fibre backhaul either.

Oh well, I guess we may find my little mast down the road is last in a long daisy-chain of microwaved masts! Could be worse...

Somebody on here said a while back that cornerstone's aim was to fibre every mast possible, would be nice if that is the case,
Maps are a bit of a mess at the moment with various bits around the country showing things like 2h coming soon, no 3g or 4g or 3G coming soon with no 2g or 4g or 4g with no 3g or 2g, not helped with that some legacy mast sharing sites being 3g only on both operators with 2g only on O2.
Hopefully as georgi said it means full 4g upgrades for all.
But there's always the old Vodafone reputation making you think they will do a lot of very little and just microwave 2g or snail paced 3g in from a nearby mast.
Time will tell I guess.

Given they want to turn 3G off across Europe by 2020, they don't really have a choice.

I think they are going to do a proper job in most cases, as they are trying to build a network that will attract customers and can sustain the future challenges. (Probably once it's built and working they will cut back spending).

The interesting part is going to be when they run out of VF or O2 sites and still have gaps. Will they spend on building a new mast? I suspect compared to upgrading the current existing sites, these will be the most expensive.

Out of interest. What % coverage of the UK do you think they will achieve neither 4g by the end of the year? The map does seem to be getting more populated slowly as they are building out existing 4g areas and enabling new areas.

loads of new masts are being applied for all over the place but councils are a nightmare CTIL have applied for more than twenty in my London borough Bexley and twenty five more in neighbouring Bromley most were turned down thou. i think at the moment out of 40 sites about across the two boroughs just twelve have now got planning approval after multiple applications often reducing the size of the mast and no of cabs over and over again many appeals ( bromley has three being appealed atm) Bexley recently got two through on appeal also. In neighbouring Dartford three have been approved without any fuss ..... bang prior approval not required !! also Gravesham who too like Dartford are not anti mast . The law needs to change to mast planning something like as long as its say not taller than 20m is more than 50m from any dwelling doesnt block the pavement and can be painted whatever colour you like it should be allowed unless in conservation or beauty spot!

I agree. I would say 15m high should be the limit, or maybe 12m ...just because this is the hight of a lamppost and people don't object to these.

A classic from reading planning in my area. Someone has objected to an EE upgrade of and old 2g site on the grounds of being next to an area that is open space, no demand and health concerns. But why? When the site is there at the moment and they are talking about a 0.5m hight increase from 11.5 to 12m. Some people just object for the sake of it I think.

I am with Voda but usually double check with O2 live status when I want to see if there will be any planed upgrade as their live status is very good and it shows any planed upgrades about 2 weeks before the upgrade happens. But on Voda map there is no planed upgrade in the next 3 months in the same area. Of course where O2 does the upgrade Voda gets it too. For example post code RG4 7JN is on O2 live status but nothing on Voda map. So I will suggest if you need to see any upcoming upgrade info just double check with O2/Voda

I only say 20m because it clears the local obstructions properly leading to less required sites but 15 would be ok lo less thou. Out of the six approved in Bromley 4 are only 10m because that's all they could get!

Yes im with you on being 20m but just thinking what sounds reasonable without planning needed? Think 15m at a push. 12m does sound more reasonable for just instant install and no planning issues.

I'd be extremely surprised if that was to happen, somewhere in the next 5-10 years would probably be more likely.

Definitely agree about watching both status.o2.co.uk and Vodas future coverage maps also roadworks.org

Yes I think 3G will be around in 2020 but maybe not much after that - it does depend how many people are using handsets that don't do 4G voice. I think the pace of handset change has slowed (ie, people still using Samsung S2's, S3's and S4's), so this will dominate the decision. Each network will be different.

Yes - given their recent Smartphone Percentage numbers, I'd imagine o2 may be held back a little in this area..

I've been in the peak district all day and everywhere we went I didn't even get 2g 😠 my sister got signal everywhere of 3g or 4g. I baffled how Vodafone can have such massive swathes of land without even 2g. I'm thinking of taking out a second contract so I can actually use my phone out of towns.

What network does your sister use?

Sounds like an improvement in EE itself lol

Vodafone have a press release out today, about a partnership with Ericsson with much smaller radio equipment. Vodafone make it sound like some sort of scientific breakthrough, but aren't they simply describing an RRU?

It is the first official statement regarding Vodafone 4G1800 I think.

Not sure how the 700mbps trials will work, unless they are thinking of 4x4mimo, possibly in combination with some TDD LTE?

Drove from Newcastle to Gatwick today with a Mifi locked to O2 4G - The signal didn't drop once and I streamed Tune In all the way! Massive improvements recently.

Unbroken 4G all the way from Newcastle to Gatwick? That's impressive indeed!

Vodafone have been rolling out LTE 2100MHz and 1800MHz in certain areas. Initially, I thought the 2100MHz 4G was limited to just parts of Central London, but then I picked it up on the M25 near Wisley Common.

Vodafone 2100MHz 4G (L21) and 1800MHz 4G (L18)

Thanks for that Peter
So what are the priority levels? I know 4G1800 is less favoured than 4G800 on O2, is this the same with Vodafone?
Is it; 2600, 800, 2100, 1800, 900?

The gap between Vodafone in Greater London and Vodafone in the rest of the country is really beginning to show though. Not that many areas will need 35MHz of aggregated LTE, of which only the S7/Edge, HTC 10, Z5 Premium and G5 will support, but it would still be good to see them put in some effort and not just a smattering of masts. It looked like Vodafone has done a slightly better job on 4G 2600 in Birmingham compared to Manchester, however they still seem to be broadcasting 2G1800 across the band so no 4G1800 yet.

As Vodafone are using the bottom 5MHz of 2100 for their 4G, chances are that the bottom 5MHz of 2100 (UARFCN 10687) will have to be cleared of 3G first?
Or may Vodafone use different spacing depending on the area?

This is great news and about time Vodafone started getting serious, 2600mhz should have been installed and wired from the beginning ready for a switch on when necessary, I'm amazed they havent switched their plans to include 2600 on all newly upgraded sites ready for activation.

Has anyone had any experience of 10mhz on 3G900 yet? Wasn't their talk of this also on Vodafonica?

The 2100MHz is same priority as 2600MHz.
I have a feeling this is why they've been doing six sector 2100 at a number of sites; sp that when they split 2100 for 3G and 4G they still keep roughly the 3G capacity
