Would it not make sense to CA with 1800? As they both have about the same range compared to 800, I'm feeling I'm totally wrong on this

Is o2 doing the same with L2100 or is this the spare 5mhz Vodafone has? As they use 2x5mhz for 3G?

If they did B1+B3, that would only be 10MHz, the same as 800MHz. So it wouldnt provide much of a speed increase, it would just increase capacity nearby to the mast.
Vodafone 4G1800 is also less widespread than 4G2100.

Both Vodafone and O2 use 2x10MHz for 3G. Vodafone have an extra 4.8MHz, which they are using for 4G2100.

I've just got myself a Vodafone payg sim in the post as I want to check to see if I can get 4g in my area anyway I have not topped it up but it is not picking up 4g the coverage checker says I should get it outside still no luck! Do I need to top up in order for it to receive a 4g signal as I've tried an o2 sim without topping up and can get 4g straight away?

That's a good point, I think phones should differentiate between standard LTE and LTE with CA. Kinda like they did for GPS vs EDGE and 3G vs H vs H+ (manufacturer symbols varied obviously)

Maybe phones do but my iPhone 6S doesn't (on O2)

Pretty sure you need to top up at least once to see 4g on the payg with Vodafone, it was the case when I tried it before moving over last year. Once you've topped, if you want to check speeds and performance use Vodafone's speed test app as it won't cost you any data.

o2 is using L1800 on some sites in London to compliment L800 (mostly in the area they control) but i dont know if handsets show 4G+ thats what i was wondering with Voda and their L2100. prob is only Sony and LG phones seem to show the +

I'll top it up and go from there! I'm surprised they have released an app to test the speed for free... Thanks I'll let you know how I get on.

Really depends on phone and firmware but I've seen some phones showing 4G+ on O2 although probably most of them don't.

Whilst it is carrier aggregation, you could make a case for not showing 4G+ unless the total is >20MHz. That's how my G4 seems to behave as it doesn't show 4G+ on O2 and it didn't when I had 1800 + 800 aggregated on VF. It does however show 4G+ on VF when 800 + 2600 is aggregated.

I didn't see CA on VF when on 2100 but I think it will do it on compatible phones. They will have to be pretty new though as 2100 in combination with other common European bands was standardised later than the other combinations we now have in use so I wouldn't expect it on cat 6 phones from last year.

Thanks for that. I did notice that B1+B20 wasn't supported by either the Nexus 5X or 6P, but after research it looked like that combination was approved in 3GPP release 12.4, which I thought was a while back?
I wish all manufacturers would list the supported carrier aggregation bands though, Google seems to be the only major one to do so.

I guess it also confirms that the iPhone 6 wouldn't be capable of B1+B20 let alone the iPhone 6S, but I guess the few cat4 phones with new chipsets released this year may well do so.

Nice speeds in faro Airport this morning on Vodafone..

https://goo.gl/photos/5qcCV6pXHwujhM818

First time I've seen the 4g+ symbol on my LG G4..
Hopefully we might get simular speeds at airports in the UK sometime.

And band 1 2100mhz 4g 5mhz is active at Liverpool Airport now, along with band 7 2600mhz, great speeds, on offer over 100mbps and 1st time I've seen 4g+ in the UK..

Hi guys how are you all, I'd like some honest answers on o2 if possible.

How are people finding 3/4G these days? I'm thinking of joining, also how do you find o2 Travel data wise?

Many thanks

Scott.

Isn't it £1.99 for 100MB of data at full speed and then super slow data when using it abroad?

Vodafone now gives 2-4GB of data depending on plan, and EE 0.5GB for £3 or £4 a day.

The O2 offering is cheaper than EE but I'd have to see how slow it becomes before being able to give a proper opinion.

O2 say tariff management in their T&C's after 150mb of general use or 50mb of steaming. Does anyone have any experience of this? How do you find o2 in the UK?

O2 are currently offering 20GB of data sim only for £20.

I can only speak for West and Central Scotland and O2 have only expanded 4G to areas that already have 3G coverage. There is a little extra overspill with 4G 800MHz but its not enough to make much of a difference as there is still plenty of 2G only areas.

O2 have till the end of 2017 to meet coverage obligations and with 18 months to go I don't see them meeting it. Ofcom will no doubt have to threaten them again and hopefully take this action this time.

O2 are actually doing a good sim only deal £20 for 20GB unlimited texts and calls on promotion at the moment. Sadly their data network where I live has shown little improvement.

The East of England is a different story with massive improvements in areas that were previously 2G only. Loads of new masts have been activated as well hitting previously uncovered areas. I have driven from north of Newcastle to south of London locked to 4G and streamed tune in the whole way with no drops. O2's rollout seems far more advanced than Vodafones which is the west up to the north of Glasgow. O2 have even built the first 4G site on Orkney so the Scotland rollout is happening now.

The coverage maps are odd down here (South Hams). O2 shows pretty good 3G although I assume this is their 900 version which doesn't work. VOD has far poorer 3G. Switch to 4G and VOD's map looks better but I would assume that any masts down here that are 4G'd would be done by Cornerstone for both?

If you look at the O2 map it actually looks OK, if only 3G900 had any backhaul behind it. Might get a sim and try it out again.

Old 3G sites (what few O2 had) will be unusable pre-upgrade.

Once done, it's great fun to see how even EDGE suddenly works really well. You actually can use FB, check email or use this forum on 2G - but of course once a site is upgraded, you'd use 3G or 4G anyway.

So, old 3G aside (tried it, gave up), is it fair to assume that VOD's and O2's 4G coverage should be exactly the same down here, given that cornerstone are doing the upgrades? Or could they be on different power levels?

Was considering swapping my VOD sim for O2 30 day SIM only for a while. Should still get the same call coverage but will have access to whatever data may be available on O2.

If you remove the 3G900 then VOD looks a better bet for data.

There could be differences with power levels because of spectrum and how surrounding sites are configured/upgraded. I'm no expert on this but I can't imagine Vodafone and O2 settings things up identically.
