Uno thats just their RCS app
Are you sure the RCS app receives SMS over wifi ?? Either way they should implement the tech standards and not use proprietary apps. Completely naffs iOS users we can't set other default apps (not that I'd want to) |

RCS is an industry platform.
Wifi calling is not so easy to implement. At LTE Voice, the EE guy reckoned wifi calling is a nightmare with no standard delivery methodology and next to no common interpretation of standards. Still, it has taken off somewhat mainly due to iPhone support. |

GreenLantern- I have tried again this morning and yes texts are sent over Wifi which also is confirmed by the activity lights on my router flashing for a couple of seconds while sending, although I am not 100% sure one of my messages sent to an iPhone has got there as not a reply from a person who normally texts straight back

Humberside Airport
Was driving past said airport and noticed there was a weak 2100MHz only 3G signal. On looking at the panels, it's possible to see that there's only 2100MHz emitted in one direction, so you would expect the signal to be weak in certain directions.
However, if you look at O2's overage map for the airport, you'll see that even in the intended direction, the 2100MHz coverage is tiny...why are they running it at such low power. |

Presumably because it's there to cover the airport?? Given how busy these cells get they probably wouldn't want it covering a vast surrounding area.

I tried to register on the VOD forum (I am a customer) to complain about their utterly pathetic neglect of the South Hams region of the UK. Not only home to many pasty munchers but also the holiday destination for all you folk who iron your clothes, wear funky specs and talk bollokks very loudly most of the time. But the confirmation email didn't come through. Big surprise. No 3G. No 4G. Unless you are in a few select places. Ridiculous.

Yes but what I'm saying (or guessing) is that the cell is there to cover the airport so if that's the only one around you don't want it to cover a large area.
Does the cell mainly point at the airport terminals? |

I've jumped in on the Vodafone thread as well, lets see if someone from Vodafone responds.

Any reports of new upgraded from Vodafone or O2 lately? Lots of planned work in my area (Shropshire, Cheshire & Staffordshire) but not seen anything new in of late. 😕

Still seem to be doing mainly what I'd call the easy wins (relatively speaking) I work in Telford and apart from the town centre it's very well served with 3g for Vodafone, great speeds, often around high teens or 20s mbps, so won't benefit as much for 4g as others, whilst a town adjacent to Telford, (Shifnal) only a few miles away has no 3g to speak of and would benefit hugely. They do need to start building out the network now a bit, not just relying on fringe reception to cover the bits in between towns.

I don't really understand why some big masts are being neglected. Beacon Hill near Torbay for instance is huge and would add a vast amount of coverage in one go, especially rural. I can't imagine backhaul would be an issue there. 3 is putting out 800 from there and you can get 4G at least 12 miles away, maybe further. I realise VOD 800 is not operating on the same power as it has to fit in 900 2G but even that is pretty much blanket coverage down here. Surely it would be a good idea to get some of those big TV masts done first?

Covering too large an area from a single mast can mean very poor speeds if the radius covers a large number of users which in turn causes a bad experience which can be damaging to their brand. The operators prefer more smaller masts in place first with smaller coverage areas giving better speeds for users initially. Once these areas are covered they can then add the big sites to fill in the gaps in between meaning at a local level you are still on the nearest mast. This should give the best speeds possible to all users.

I agree the big masts should be upgraded asap why not in rural areas there are not enough users to slow down the experience and beacon hill is prime for this

That argument for speed is just nonsense, as the same area still serves the same number of users with only gprs or edge so it's not exactly providing a great brand image right now, the thing Vodafone need to catch on to is people who live on towns they serve occasionally move between them from time to time and where as a few years ago they might just use the phone in the car for calls now they stream radio, pod casts, audiobooks, Spotify even if your the driver and a hell of a lot more if your a passenger, so rural masts are just as important and they need to start catching up.

Screw the speed. How about a bit of coverage? VO2 is pathetic in the South Hams which is a very popular holiday destination for more important humans who actually need a data signal. Obviously, those of us who live here are mere peasants and will be delighted with a sniff of 2G. We'll probably think it's witchcraft or something and burn the masts down.
There are a lot of 2G mast getting the full 2/3/4 coverage now in rural areas of Northumberland and the borders. These have always been either 2G or no service areas so things are moving in the right direction at least up here anyway! |

It's a historical issue and VOD should be putting more than anyone into catching up. Thing is, if I want to check the bank or something simple like that, I just need half a meg or something. It doesn't need to be blistering. There are too many places where having a smartphone on VOD is just pointless and that is ridiculous in 2015. They have rested on their 900 advantage for too long and that is about to be overturned as their rivals roll out 800 big style.
They just need to crack on with it. Take a leaf out of EE's book. Get the coverage out there first and build the backhaul up later. It's a much better way, especially for rural sites where there may be a small number of users at any one time. It would also mean they wouldn't have to show 2G on their 3G and 4G maps to avoid being humiliated by their failure. |

4G/3G priority on O2 is confusing.
I was right next to an O2/Three (I guess EE too) site, that was broadcasting 2100MHz 3G on O2. The signal was -69dBm. So my phone then switched to a -97dBm 4G signal. How does this make sense as I thought 4G was below 3G in priority? |
