I found a mast I photographed which was 900MHz 2G only with four panels. Looks like it was a fairly common arrangement used due to reduced sensitivity of older handsets. Added a load more pics to Vodafone and O2 legacy 900 and 2100MHz mast setups so prepare private browsing

I used VoLTE on Vodafone today. A Galaxy S6 to S6 edge.

Only thing to note is that we were in a Faraday cage in Newbury on a test network, but I can confirm it worked fine.

Only wish there would be a confirmed date for switch on now.

The issues for VF, no doubt as for EE, relate to handing off to legacy sites, and interoperability with its different infrastructure vendors.

I wasn't allowed to take photos but their test network is basically every type of network technology and from every vendor (Huawei, Nokia Siemens, Ericsson etc).

Congratulations jonmorris. I did always wonder if Cornerstone going for a mix of three vendors would come back to bite them, EE suffering much less as the amount of NSN EE sites are tiny I think. At least the country is grouped into different vendors so transferring between vendors will only happen on longer journeys. I'm unsure about the London situation though.

They spoke of the east/West split between VF and Telefonica but didn't want to talk about the London situation. I sensed it might be a sore subject, and will ultimately impact the whole rollout of VoLTE.

Having seen the South Hams lit up with lots more 3G lately, I put my VOD sim in the data capable slot in phone and went for a drive. I did check the map in the morning to see where I should be able to get this improved 3G and guess what? It's gone again. Not current or planned. I can confirm that the map is correct. No 3G anywhere until I got to paignton and then strong 3G signal with absolutely no data throughput.

I've only got 48p credit left on the VOD sim and I can't top up on line as it just refuses the card, apparently without asking the bank if I have any money first. So I need to use the app which wants to connect for the first time over the VOD data network. Easier said than done. I have been through this before and have since been able to top up over wifi with paypal but now the app says it needs to connect to the network again. That's fine except with 5 bars of 3G, the topup page hangs and times out. Tried several times in different places.

Way to go VOD. Might switch back to O2 for calls as at least I could top up.

Or EE or 3 could simply turn on 800 in my area and that would be problem solved.

So is Vodafone's plan to provide everyone with a personal mobile Faraday cage?
I like it.
The other networks won't see that one coming!

I'm refusing until they turn on 800. They are having a senior board meeting right now about how they can speed up roll out to get me signed up.

Odd one here. I'm testing a Giffgaff sim in my phone for 4G thinking it would give me an idea of o2's 4G coverage.

The local town has recently had two cornerstone 4G sites switched on but when testing speeds I cannot get anything higher than about 3mb/s download. Upload is almost consistently around 20mb/s.

If I put my Vodaphone sim in at the same site it's at least 20up and down. Could there be some sort of massive cap on Giffgaff traffic?

I imagine the sites are very congested considering they are covering the same area as seven EE sites but is 3mb/s typical on o2 4G?

Or you could move to O2 for the same result.

Giffgaff is mega low priority. Here: voda 70mbps, O2 75mbps, Giffgaff 2mbps

Almost certainly. MVNO have lower priority.

Hmmm, methinks Tesco might have a little more clout than GiffGaff!

As I understand it though O2 have a special agreement (as they were once touched by the hand of God (BT)) that their 2G900 would in effect be the best 2G in the entire Galaxy and would in effect be immune to the personal Faraday cage.
3G and 4G however would be guaranteed not to work... or your money back....
Victor Kiam was a backer apparently.......

(for those not as er, mature as Jon or myself........ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qf22bddvLnc )

Ah that explains it. I suppose that's the reason GiffGaff is so cheap!

Oh well, only got the sim to test coverage anyway!

Thanks Jon, enjoyed that. I'm with Three and Vodafone and agree that in areas where Vodafone have upgraded the service is excellent.

Any news on the South Hams? Seems to be a major black hole for VOD.
