I've just took out a contract with voda and can confirm you cant use data on 3G during a call. They never seem capable of setting anything up correctly.

I am able to use data during a call. If it's an old legacy mast it's connected to forget it!
And by saying properly, I mean that it is so slow, the webpages timeout. |

Based on this, all masts in Brighton and Hove area should be legacy. Because you cannot use 3G data properly while in cellular voice call.

Brighton appears to have a capacity problem, with dire 4G and unusable 3G reported. When I was there, the speeds were OK, but definitely showing signs of strain. If your call is being carried on 3G900, I can well see how data would be unusable.
If you come in Brighton again let me know. We could go mast hunting with cameras and fieldtest

I've seen a few posts across the various threads now complaining about speeds in Brighton on three, EE and Vodafone.
I wonder if it's a case of networks not investing in enough masts & capacity or if they've all not been allowed to build additional masts & capacity. |

Click on 'Find and comment on planning applications'. In the Application Type drop down list select 'TELECOMMUNICATION AERIALS'. You will see that most of the are from EE/Three and are replacements of current equipment. There are very few applications for new installations, most of them refused. |

Refused.
Thought as much.. Some areas around me turn everything down, then complain in the local press that there area is being left behind/neglected by operators due to the lack of 4g. |

no all the masts are hardly used, I get 65mbps/ 20 up anytime of the day on 4g. It works fine on 2100Mhz 3g or if im not in a call on 900mhz 3g. very few people seem to be on voda in the area as it was so appalling 12 months ago.

I am in a VF upgraded area (but the issue was there previously). I can do a speedtest and I get around 6Mbps on 3G900 (at home). Then make a call and the data just stops. Well, goes at sub-GPRS speeds. The odd email might come through but speedtests won't even start. End the call and it's all working properly again. Tried with multiple iPhones and in multiple areas. Same even when right up next to the mast on 3G2100. |

This is my experience also - posted about it a good few pages back.

Vodafone Roaming
As promised, currently getting around 20-30mb down 4-5up on AT&T 4G all over network even in hotspots like Times Square etc... Must be capped for roamers, pings of around 100-200. Can't complain though the service is rock solid even in the subways. Sooner pay £5 a day than 3's heavily restricted free service!

From my own experiences, I only stay on 3G when calling Three phones. When I call my mom on EE, it always drops to 2G, legacy mast or not. When someone in my family called me on O2, i was connected to WiFi so I don't know if it stays on 3G or not.
In a 4G area where the 3G has been refreshed, the 3G holds well and you get HD voice (if handsets support) and its very good. |

If on an iPhone you can't see the mode when on WiFi in a call, but its going to do the same. From my own experience where this happens on Vodafone is in areas where 3G was rushed out to meet the Ofcom target, and its not really usable, so the phone falls back ot the 2G network for reliable voice.

I've decided to give Vodafone a shot after a few years on 3 then EE. I had a few locations that were annoying where I'd have no signal on EE and although I do believe 800Mhz 4G will likely sort those eventually I didn't fancy waiting an unknown amount of time for that to go live everywhere I needed it.
Combine that with an amazing deal which means I'm only really paying Vodafone around £7 a month for the same plan I had with EE I decided I should give them a go. However... Jesus H. Christ are Vodafone bad at taking my money and also bad at providing any sort of support at all. I genuinely won't list all the things that have gone wrong because simply no one has the time to read it all, some highlights so far: - Their shopping cart crashed 3 times preventing me from placing my order, I eventually had to use a different browser as apparently their cart isn't compatible with Safari on OS X right now...(!!). - My order confirmation email and number were useless, no one at Vodafone could find my order at all. - Spent 50 minutes trying to get through to customer support before giving up, there's only so much Ellie Goulding on loop you can listen to. - They have no dedicated business support team or number it seems, despite being a business customer I'm lumped in the queue with everyone (not my experience on o2, EE or 3). - Finally got someone helpful by ringing sales instead of support and they advised me that my order needed several forms of proof sent to Vodafone including a signed letter on headed notepaper confirming what plan I wanted exactly (remind me what the point of the online order system was again?). - SIM card arrives today but comes with nothing, no welcome letter or anything. Just a SIM card in the post. - Try to use the online number port form, select the option before starting the form that I'm a business customer proceed through form only to get this error: "The number you've entered may be a pay as you go or business number. You can only enter a pay monthly mobile number.". WUT. - Speak to people on live chat (having gone via the business live chat link) and every single person I speak to says I have come through to non-business support and to use the business link. No amount of explaining to them convinces them I have. - Are you getting bored yet? - Decide to ring sales again to try and get some help, lady says she'll transfer me to the correct team to get this sorted out. ONE HOUR AND THIRTY MINUTES LATER I give up on Ellie Goulding again and hang up the call. - Kick up such a fuss on live chat about the hold time they ring me despite apparently not supposedly being able to (I was told before by others). Get put through to dedicated porting team. They try to start the port the number but there is an internal error in their systems. Get put back on hold, finally she starts to say it's going to happen and then the line goes garbled. For two minutes. I give up. I won't bother you with the other bits like my account apparently being created without any account number at all so no one can find it and leave you with the exciting news that my number is apparently going to be ported across tomorrow. I really REALLY hope their network is better than their support and ordering systems otherwise I'm out of here faster than you can say EE. |

Upon entering my temporary Vodafone number when prompted by the customer support system I was informed the number wasn't recognised despite it being their number they issued me. Maybe if that'd worked I'd have been put through to business support. However my hour and a half on hold before giving up was supposedly after having my call directed to business support by the business sales team so I'm doubtful having a direct number will make any difference. I hope I'm wrong. |

Yes if you push hash it puts you through to standard customer service, who probably can't access your account as you're on a different system.
The business team are obtained by 191 but I will try and track down a direct number for them for you. |

Network wise I've not really done enough on it to draw any conclusions yet. I was out and about most of today and had 4G everywhere except one location indoors but the full bars of 3G I did have worked great. All browsing has been snappy. The speed tests suggest I'm not going to be breaking any records but I couldn't care less about that as long as it works! |

My phone stays on 3g. When I was on Orange way back and EE it used to drop to 2g all the time.
So in terms of 'most improved network 2015' I would give a gold star to Vodafone. |
