It was the series that killed Big Brother on Channel 4.

It also began as one of the dullest, with only that wannabe punk causing the odd bit of friction. The whole thing was uncomfortable and although Jade, Jo and Danielle were clearly making racist comments.. it's sad in a way that Jade became the face of it. Danielle got away untarnished despite saying some vile things. "I think she should **** off back home" - that's clearly racist and meant as hatred. "Shilpa poppadom" - is bloody stupid, ill-thought, racist but was it hatred? Was it motivated racial hatred? I don't think so and I've always felt that Jade was made the scapegoat in that mess of a series.

It was awful to watch. I remember it being huge at the time and everyone dropped things to watch Jade's eviction to no crowd one night - iirc it got about 7million viewers? The highest rated show since BB3 final, which is when she left the first time ironically.

If anyone happened to watch BB15USA this year that was similar only the contestants who weren't racist were in the minority. They said some extremely awful things. I'm still surprised it didn't make worldwide news, it wasn't even that big in the USA I don't think.

Btw did the others have a crowd when they left? Jo and Danielle?

... well technically she didn't.

She did try more than any of the others to make amends however. To me, it always seemed she was motivated by jealousy than racial hatred.

Nothing enjoyable about it though. Poor series.

I think it slipped into racism when she was calling her ShilpaPoppaDom / Shilpa****awalla but you are right on Jade's part is was mainly about Shilpa's class and beauty. Danielle Lloyd really egged Jade on by giving her an audience and the more she praised Jade the worse Jade got and Jo was just such a silly, stupid girl who just tagged along in case she was the one that got bullied. A case of better being in the tent pissing out, as opposed to being pissed all over.

Shilpa came out of it outstandingly well. She was very forgiving, dignified and classy.

Also, after she won and saw the clips that had got people talking, she gave the most amazing speech which actually led the audience to give her a standing ovation. I think it's worth people here seeing it again: (from 1:25:15) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8N7b7qZuJA

Jade and Danielle were both called into the diary room and had what they said about Shilpa read back to them. Both eventually apologised to Shilpa.

I've just watched Jo's leaving interview and they showed footage of what she said to Shilpa which seems to be a lot worse than what Jade did. Nothing makes it right though, so far all have come across looking like vile bullies.

My strong memory of this is Jade saying (and no I cannot remember her exact words) during the stock cube argument "You should see the people living on the streets in India", I agree I think it was more a class thing with Jade.

And Shilpa IMO was not as 'nice' and un worldly as she was made out to be.

Thanks for that - well worth remembering what a class act Shilpa was

I went through hell on C4 Forum because I was the only one in my crew who liked her

I agree the F8ckawalla and Poppadum references were incredibly thick, said I believe to further the "joke" that Jo was making about Shilpa's accent, but racial hatred is not what was the root of it. It was Shilpa's superiority to Jade that was the real issue and Jade couldn't bear her because of it. Also, let's not paint Shilpa as some saint here either, she did look down with disdain at Jackie, Jade's mum and Jade picked up on it and reacted. I thought Channel 4 caused this whole horrible debacle when they made jade and her family the people who had to be waited on hand and foot, this did not go down at all well with Shilpa, or Jermaine Jackson or Ken the elderly bloke (sorry, can't remember his second name) They did it to cause conflict and it completely backfired! It all came to a head over a bloody stock cube ffs!

Well it wasn't without its consequences. Jo had a total breakdown in the weeks after the series finished. Her house was repossessed and I don't think she's ever worked in TV since. Jade ended up in The Priory for a bit and was vilified in a way never seen before or since. And of course her subsequent death. Only Danielle really survived the shitstorm although she was in a high profile relationship with Teddy Sherringham at the time and he dumped her.

What happened to Jade was tragic. Her whole life was tragic in many ways. She had a really hard upbringing and was very ignorant and that told in that CBB.

A movie could be made on her life and how it started and her break on Big Brother to what we all know ended up happening. Truly sad.

Jade for all her faults was a strong girl, with a child that never was inside of her, I have always felt a great sadness for Jade.

I still think this whole debacle was blown WAY out of proportion. Jade never actually said very much at all that could actually be considered to be racist. In fact the ONLY racist thing she said was "Shilpa Poppadom". Other than that, nothing. She certainly wasn't very nice to Shilpa, but it wasn't racially motivated to the extent it was made out to be. I really felt for her in the interview. She was trying so hard to explain herself but because she could be inarticulate she struggled.

If anyone was more to blame for being racist it was Danielle, who for example at one point said "I think she should **** off home". Now that is far more racially motivated than 99% of the things Jade ever said.

Yes I agree that Danielle was the prime racist. She said something with great disgust about Indians 'eating with their hands' only because Shilpa happened to be Indian. She forgot the part about people globally eating burgers & pizzas with hands. I remember Teddy Sheringham dating her at that time too & he had to dump her for his own rep whilst she was in the house...she got another footballer eventually though. She got off relatively scott-free. I think Jade was the most desperate to redeem herself. I don't know if she was invited on the Indian Big brother or if she asked them to invite her. I agree also that it was about class as well. Think maybe Shilpa's physical appearance played a part too...Jealousy. It was the ugliest celeb bb.

Loved Shilpa as a HM, she was fantastic and entered into the spirit of the programme with great humour. Terrible shame she ran into the Goody clan and the other two witches .

Can you provide an example of this great humour of Shilpa's that you talk of? I'm having trouble recalling it to be honest.
