Danielle got away untarnished despite saying some vile things. "I think she should **** off back home" - that's clearly racist and meant as hatred. "Shilpa poppadom" - is bloody stupid, ill-thought, racist but was it hatred? Was it motivated racial hatred? I don't think so and I've always felt that Jade was made the scapegoat in that mess of a series.”

Completely agree (& not just because Jade is no longer with us)! I remember getting really angry that Danielle and Jo seemed to be getting away with being just as bad. Yes Jade lost her temper but ALL three were behaving like nasty, bullying schoolgirls.

I forgot this was Leo Sayer's series too - he was dreadful! Spoke about himself in the third person and seemed to think he was the biggest star in the world. Another one who behaved like a school child and made himself look like an absolute pillock. Wonder if he realises now?

This CBB was kind of the beginning of the end for BB/CBB on Channel 4.The sponsors Carphone Warehouse pulled out half way through due to the comments being made in the house. I don't know if all of the comments were racist as such or if they were intentionally racist, I do think a lot of it was down to ignorance and old fashioned bullying. Shilpa was/is a beautiful lady and I think the 3 witches (Jo, Jade, Danielle) picked up on this and used it against her, coupled in with the fact she was Indian and had a different culture they just constantly picked at her. For me the one thing that annoyed me the most was the shows lack of intervention, they knew the uproar it was causing but carried on simply because they cared about the viewing figures over Shilpas well being. After the series BB was in quite a disarray, I don't think they did a CBB series for 2 years after this (BB hijack anyone)

I would almost say the repercussions lasted almost up til this series , obviously they are still there but Big Brother has been in the news again , it's stirred people up again and it's great to see

You see, where Jade was at an automatic disadvantage was that she entered the house that time with a lot of ready made detractors from her stint in the civilian BB, who were only too happy to revel in her getting the blame for it all. The others were starting off with a clean slate so were very lucky to have got away as lightly as they did. Channel 4 knew about how Jade and her mother would come across to the outside instantly, and probably had a fair idea of how the other housemates would perceive her, that's why they were made the aristocrats of the house with the others to be their skivvies. And of course the delectable Jack Tweed was also thrown into the mix for good measure.

Imo this was a complete disaster waiting to happen, I think C4 underestimated the amount of hate Jade had, and then she gained it 10 fold after this. The despicable vitriol she received on this forum alone during her illness and after her death was solid proof of it, and it just wasn't deserved. At least I don't think so.

I agree. Mind you, so many people on here just want to spout vicious hatred that I'm starting to think we have a nation of people who aren't very well mentally. Fine to be annoyed, aggravated etc but to waste time and energy REALLY hating people you don't know is a bit peculiar to me and not healthy.

It was indeed the most explosive and gripping series ever.

They still had live screening then and some of the sustained attacks and bullying on Shilpa late at night was astonishing. A lot of this was not shown or severely cut on the main show.

The real catalyst was the arrival of Jade's family who became masters in the house and made Jade much too secure and overconfident in her attitudes and opinions.

Danielle and Jo both latched onto Jade as the 'leader of the house' and fully supported her in all her attacks.

A lot of the direct racism came from Danielle and Jo but Jade was by no way immune from this also, though a lot of her sheer hatred of Shilpa seemed to derive from her refined manners and stunning looks.

Some of the other housemates could see what was going on but no one intervened overtly in support of Shilpa by directly challenging the obvious unacceptable behaviour of the threesome. Quite cowardly really and frustrating for the impotent viewers.

Some nice sub plots as well with Dirk clearly falling for Shilpa but with no reciprocation from her and of course the hilarious Leo situation which showed him up in a real bad light really.

Quite, but backed up by her family and cohorts Jade made Shilpa the target of unrelenting abuse which boosted Shilpa's popularity (and she was already quite popular).

Jim has been enjoying the same sort of boost from being targeted in the current series. Voters love a housemate who stands their ground against an abusive group.

yeah I don't think BB/CBB recovered after it to be honest. I think its made them more aware and more likely to intervene during arguments/bullying etc.

At first they did seem to all get on but Jackiey seemed to have a bit of an issue with Shilpa, kept calling her weird names because she couldn't learn 'Shilpa' and was quite aggressive towards her. I remember a scene where Jackiey began baiting Shilpa which clearly upset her and H asking her to be nice. After Jackiey was evicted, the shit hit the fan.

Could have been a great series but ruined by racism. Leo Sayer's meltdown was the highlight for me.

Well they lost most of their sponsors and OFCOM ruled against them and sanctioned C4, after receiving by far the most complaints about a programme in its history.

C4 subsequently suspended the show which didn't reappear for two years.

I still feel the OFCOM complaints stemmed from a Digital Spy thread.

One forum member posted the OFCOM link and I think lots of posters just clicked on it and made a complaint.

It ended up being like watching one of Jim Davidson's stand-up shows!
